RACES LIKE A CHAMPION WATERVALE REDUCES AMERICAN RECORD FOR ONE MILE AND SIXTY YARDS. Belmont Three-Year-Old Cuts Mark of 1:43, Re-cently Made by Priscillian, to 1:42 and Scores Without Being Fully Extended. Baltimore, Md., May !. August Belmonts handsome three-year-old, Watervale, bids fair to take Fitz Herberts place as the champion thoroughbred racer in America. In the sixth race at Iiinlieo this afternoon Watervale reduced the American record for one mile and sixty yards to l:42g. It was a Tew days ago that 1riscillian made a new American record of 1:43 j for this distance. Watervale bettered Priscilllans mark by one and onc-lifth seconds. The pace was tcrriiic throughout, the fractional time being 23, 4T, 1:124. l:3Ss. 1:425. At no time luring the running did Watervale appear to be fully extended and as the winning mark was passed his margin over Uncus Chief was live lengths. The lielmont colors were also carried to victory in the opening race, in which Vestibule beat Cherry Seed a neck. F. It. Hitchcock, another member of the Jockey Club, scored a double during the afternoon. Bouncer took the third race, while Fumour beat Moisant. a neck in the tifth race after a long stretch drive. X. C. Hildreths share of the purses came with the running of the second race, in which Fitz Herbert scored easily at odds of 1 to 30. It was Fit. Herberts third start here and he has a clean record. Old Hercnlold, champion of the cross-country division a few years ago. made his re-appearance after an absence of several years in the steeplechase for hunters, which he won with ease. Watervales performance of today was so impressive that, many of the horsemen predict that he will reduce other American records this season, provided he does-not go wrong. He has about as great a turn of speed as any horse that ever meed in. this country. It was the first time that trainer John Whalen had ever asked the colt to go more than Ihree quarters of a mile. Watervale was given oareful preparation for todays race, his last work, having been a mile under restraint in 1:43. Clint Ie Witt endeavoring to secure an apprentice to do his lightweight riding. It is said that he has closed with James McLaughlin for the contract which the latter holds on jockey Schuttinger. James Blute purchased for W. I Austin the throo-year-ohl Kormak from S. C. Hildroth this morning. Louis Ungor has bought the two-year-old Kickle of August Belmont and Ed Moore has purchased of William Garth the two-year-old Bait and the useful plater Iaul Davis. Wvandot. winner of the first race yesterday, was boosted 00 by E. Itathinan. The latter is said to have acted for Frank Nolan. The colt was protected and liought in by Mr. Hitchcock for .
