MONTREAL STAKES WELL PATRONIZED. Montreal, Que.. May 9. That the spring meeting of the Montreal Jockey Club this season will surpass that of former years is shown by the record list of entries which have been received at the clubs ollice in Montreal. These stakes, like those of the other Canadian tracks, closed May 1 and entries have been arriving ever since. The largest nominator for the Jacques Cartier Stakes and the Windsor Hotel Cup, which carry ,200 in added money, is S. C. Ilildreth. He has named all ills best horses in these two events, while lie has been liberal in the Kindergarten Stakes for two-year-olds. Many important eastern stables have made nominations for the four stakes and witli the handicaps which are to be run, the meeting should prove the most successful and attractive in the history of the club. The overnight purses have all been increased. There arc only four stakes, the management considering it more advisable to put the money of the club into valuable overnight handicaps. The weather has boon remarkably warm here for the past couple of weeks, so the track is in better condition than at a corresponding time for many seasons. Men have already been put at work renovating the stables and many other improvements will be made before the opening of the meeting. There are more locally-owned horses being trained in Montreal than for some time and they, are much farther advanced.
