THE MANAGER A GOOD ONE THOMAS C. MDOWELLS COLT WINS RICHEST STAKE OF KENTUCKY SEASON. Son of Voter and Bracegirdle Scores Over Best Band of Juveniles Brought Together in Kentucky for Many Years Favorites Take Purses, Lexington, Ky., May 9. A magnificent crowd, numbering many of the representative people of the Blue Grass region, was at the Kentucky Associatiou course this afternoon and saw Thomas Clay McDowells powerful Voter P.raeegirdle colt, The Manager, expertly ridden by jockey T. Koerner, score an easy triumph in the rich Breeders Futurity over prob-ably the best band of two-year-old colts and fillies that have been seen under colors in a nice in Ken-tucky in many years. The victory of The Manager was a popular one. His achievement in his initial start on Thursday last, when he romped home in front of the swift running Texas filly, Calisse. had Stamped him as a racer of real merit and, perforce, he went to the post today an odds-on favorite. The weather and track conditions were ideal and the race was run in the fast time of 4S for the half mile, which is within one-quarter of a second of the track record made by Kings Daughter, likewise the property of Mr. McDowell, as a two-year-old in May 1905 with 105 pounds up. Of the eligibles carded to start, .T. W. Fryes .Toe Knight and J. N. Camdens Agora were withdrawn, the former because he is still coughing and the latter because of the failure of jockey Taplin. who had been engaged for the mount, to put In an appearance. This left fourteen to go to the post. The track at the half-mile ground is narrower than elsewhere and when the fourteen colts and fillits were lined up there was considerable crowding. They were there six minutes before starter Cassidy caught them in alignment and released the barrier. Praetorian wheeled and was left, while King Broomstick pulled up due to interference. The starting point is right at the turn and before it was readied The Manager was in the lead, with Bachelor Girl at his girth. Coins up the hill The Manager steadily drew away and turned into the stretch with a lengths margin. The Manager was running with admirable easo and apparently not in the slightest danger of being overhauled, but an eighth from the finish Koerner possibly through anxiety, drew his whip, suspended it in the air for an instant as if in doubt and then let it fall sharply to the colts flank. The youngster shot away witli a surprising burst of speed and in the twinkling of an eye increased his lead to nearly three lengths. Koerner, with confidence now thor- oughly established, began easing up through the last sixteenth, and The Managers margin over Bachelor Girl at the finish was two lengths. Bachelor Girl mode a sweep outward coming down the stretch about an eighth of a mile from home, but Ganz steadied her quickly and she came on gamely to get the place from the rushing Wheelwright, by half a length, the latter taking third money rom Beautiful hj- a head. Buckhom, from a poor start, was a fast-coming colt at the finish and will be dangerous company from this time on with fair racing Inck. Curtain Call was prominent at the beginning of the stretch drive, but weakened nearing the finish. Wheelwright and Dilatory, both came out of the race with injuries due to the crowding and kicking at the post. Wheelwright was cut in the stifle and Dilatory was kicked on the hock. The Breeders Futurity was the richest stake of the season in Kentucky. Its gross value was ,165. of which the winner got ,015.50, making the net value to the winner ,S4S. the second horse 1,-41S and the third horse .09. . This was- the second running of the stake. C. L. Harrisons Housemaid, a daughter of Broomstick, having won it last year in 4SJ. The distance of the Futurity of 1912, to obviate the crowding at the. post, has been increased to four and one-half furlongs. Next to the Futurity, the most interesting race of the afternoon was the second, in which two-year-olds were asked for the lirst time this year to go five-eighths of a mile. It produced a rattling good contest and was won by J. W. Mays Mary Emily, winner of the Elmendorf Stakes on Thursday last, ridden by jockey Goose at 115 pounds. She ran the distance in 1:001, within one-fifth of a second of the track record. Guaranola was off in front, but -Mary Emily took the. lead rounding the first turn, with Tourist at her throat-latch, and so they raced to the finish. Traymore, coming fast on the outside, took third from John Robert. Guaranola had no excuse and is not as good a colt as his people believed him to be. E. R. Bradleys Bell Horse made a runaway of the opening dash at a mile. Ho went the first live-eight lis in 1:00 and came home under wraps in 1:40?. He is eligible to the Kentucky Derby and probably will start. Wayne .Toplins Golden Pearl, backed with confidence, led all the way In the third race, but had to bo hard ridden at the end to stall off the fast-coming Rompie. George Odoms Prince Gal, making his first appearance of this season, outclassed his company in the fifth race, and won easily. The closing race -was simply a breather for R. F. Carmans Arcite. He was in front all the way and won under mild restraint, in 1:401, within one-fifth of a second of the track record for tho mile and twenty yards. Arcite was entered at 00 and J. T. Carmody bid him up to ,200. Mr. Carman retained him with the customary advance of . R. V. Carman, in retaliation for the run-up of Arcite, claimed Mbntagnic, which finished second, paying 25 for him. Pronounced favorites won all of the races except the first, for which the choices were Bell Horse, Hazel Burke and Jack Rieger at about equal odds. Starter Cassidy suspended jockey Troxler for the. remainder of the meeting. William Gerst, the Nashville brewer and turfman, was among the visitors today. His horses are doing well at Louisville. W. II. Fizer will leave Thursday morning for Louisville with his horses. Part of the Carman string will be sent to Louisville Thursday and the others will go Friday. A freak of the pari-mutuels was shown in the pay on Arcite today. The straight tickets figured 1 to 4, while there was 1 to 2 for place and 45 to 100 to show. A heavy outside commission went ir. straight at the last minute. The best moves noted at the Kentucky Association track this morning after a light shower that served to settle the dust were: Polls Three-eighths in .10?. handily.
