WITH THE KINGS PLATERS AT WOODBINE. Powderman Figures in Sensationally Good Piece of Work Gossip from Canadian Sources. Toronto, Out., .May 9. Whether Woodbine is faster than in other springs or the Kings Platers ere a better lot than usual, the preparations of the principal candidates for the race on the twentieth of May indicate a contest of unusual interest. As tilings stand at present at least four owners, with seven or eight horses, have to be reckoned witli after eliminating those whose chances seem quite improbable. Of course seemingly improbable themselves may furnish the winner of the Guineas and it is tills charm of uncertainty that forms one of its great attractions. The best work that a Kings Plater has shown was recorded today when the Valley Farm Stable colt, Powderman, went a mile in 1:1.11 and was eased up the mile and a quarter in 2:11. He was accompanied by Legislator the lirst mile, and was not ridden at any part, except just when the other colt was about to drop out so that he should not slacken up when losing his company. He had more than his weight up, and the work was accomplished without dilliculty. The much-talked-of St. Bass, worked alone, a mile in 1:47? and finished the mile and a quarter in 2:14?. He did not gallop witli his usual freedom and when he pulled up he. was nodding, but In walked out of the apparent lameness and was all right a little later. . The aged stallion. Billeneer, named in the plate, but not a prohahlo. starter, could not do better than a mile in 1:50. under pressure. Mr. Seagrams horses had their first work since coming from Waterloo. The Platers Ilavrock and Jane Shore did a mile in 1:4S?. Tollendal went with them and the work was satisfactory. The three-year-old fillies Spinning Wheel, Bride Lane and At Once, the last named an English-bred, went in 1:493. Bouquet went alone a mile in 1:47?. and the English colt. Galatine, did his turn in 1:40?. The two-year-olds Dollallolla. Madrigaletto, SatI and Possessed worked a half in 52. The only other Plater to be sent along was Mr. Mackenzies Miss Martimas. which is thriving wonderfully in her training. She went a mile in 1:471 and a mile and a quarter in 2:101, eased up after tiie mile. Her work was smooth ami easy, and she will improve from it. The last, of the more important Canadian stables to reach Woodbine will lie the Brookdale horses of the Messrs. Dyment of Barrio. Though not represent ejl in the Plate this year, the. Barrie horses in-elmlN material for next years aiid future races for the hoine-bnite. A couple of years ago the Brook-dale Stable bought a numlier of highly-bred mares, most of them in foal to successful sires, and half a dozen of their progeny are among Die two-year-olds now in training under John Dyments care, with the veteran John Dixon as foreman. Mr. Dyment lias a great favorite among the youngsters, the Cesarion colt Marcovil. which looks like his old champion Arab. The hordes are as far forward as anything here, the mile track at the farm having been ready for use as soon as the snow went. The lot expected consists of: Chief Keo, I, e, 4, by Alloway Decade. The Tongorder youngsters are the first of the progeny of that fast horse, Tongorder, winner at Woodbine six years ago of four of the best races at the meeting, including the Toronto Cup. the Woodstock Plate and the King Edward Gold Cup. His colts are good-looking, fast, and built on a more substantial scale than Tongorder himself. Around Barrie there is no doubt felt as to the success of Tongorder as a sire. All of the youngsters above named are Province-breds, except the last two. Tropacolium. the giant Nasturtium colt, is believed to be the fastest of the youngsters. One of the gratifying features of the entries for tiie Ontario Jockey Club stakes is the nomination of twenty-four two-year-olds in the Coronation Stakes, for Canadian-brcds. This means that Canadian owners have two dozen youngsters that are to be turned loose without being kept for the Plate and guarantees that the reserve Is large enough to indicate the breaking of all records for entries in next years Plate. The Canadian Racing Associations committee will meet tomorrow to pass on applications for licenses, the appointment of oliicials and other matters for the season now at hand. The official list at all the tracks will be practically the same as last year. It is reported here that the Niagara Raeing Association will probably inaugurate the niutuel system at Fort Erie this year instead of waiting until next season. Starter W. M. Murray is here.
