RACES LIKE A CHAMPION WATERVALE REDUCES AMERICAN RECORD FOR ONE MILE AND SIXTY YARDS. Belmont Three-Year-Old Cuts Mark of 1:43, Recently Made by Priscillian, to 1:42 and Scores Without Being Fully Extended. Baltimore, Md., May 9. August Belmonts handsome three-year-old, Watervale. bids fair to take Fitz Herberts place as tin: champion thoroughbred racer in America. In the sixth race at limlico this afternoon Watervale reduced the American record for one mile and sixty yards to 1:42s. It was a few days ago that Priscillian made a new American record of 1:41? for this distance. Watervale bettered Priseillians mark by one and one-lifth seconds. The pace was terrific throughout, the fractional time being 2::. 47, 1:121. 1:1S. 1:42?. At no time during the running did Watervale appear to be fully extended and as the winning mark was passed his margin over Uncas Chief was live lengths. The Belmont colors were also carried to victory in the opening race, in which Vestibule beat Cherry Seed a neck. F. It. Hitchcock, another member of the Jockey Club, scored a double during the afternoon. Bouncer look the third race, while Funiour beat Moisant a neck in the lifth race after a long stretch drive. S. C. Ilildreths share of the purses came with the running of the second race, in which Fitz Herbert scored easily at odds of 1 to 150. It was Fit. Herberts third start here and he has a clean record. Old Ilerculoid. champion of the cross-country division a few years ago. made his re-appearance after an absence of several years in the steeplechase for hunters, which lie won with ease. Watervales performance- of today was so impressive that many of the horsemen predict that he will reduce other American records this season, provided he docs-not go wrong. He has about as great a turn of speed as any horse that ever raced in this country. It was the tirst time that trainer John Wlialen had ever asked the colt to go more than three quarters of a mile. Watervale was given oarnful preparation for todays race, his last work, having been a mile under restraint in 1:48. Clint le Witt is endeavoring to secure an apprentice to do his lightweight riding. It Is said that he has closed with James McLaughlin for the contract which the latter holds on jockey Schuttinger. James Blute purchased for W. P. Austin the three-year-old Kormak from S. C. Ilildreth this morning. Louis linger has bought the two-year-old Nickle of August Belmont and Ed Moore has purchased of William Garth the two-year-old Bait and the useful pi .iter Paul Davis. Wyandot, winner of the first race yesterday, was boosted 00 by E. Batiiman. The latter is said to have acted for Frank Nolan. The colt was protected and lxmght in by Mr. Hitchcock for 51..505. James Rowe was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. He came over from New Jersey to saddle Stilly Night in the third race. Harry Payne Whitneys colors were seen in public here this afternoon for the first time this season. lie had two starters, Stillv Night and Eaton Blue. Robert Davies wired S. C. Ilildreth seeking the services of jockey C. II. Shilling in the Kings Plate, to be run at Toronto May 20. The boy has a pre vious engagement in the race and will probably ride one of the Hendrie starters. Mr. Ilildreth is culling out his stable preparatory to shipping to Canada. He did a lot of horse trading this morning. P. L. Oxnard, acting for a friend in Virginia, secured the stallion Fayette, by Ogdon Saratoga Belle. Ivan Fox purchased Eddie Dugan, with the idea of making a jumper of him, and Hugh Penny bought Wood Dove. William Lanahan has presented to .Mr. Ilildreth a half interest in the steeplechaser Dinna Ken, which he bought yesterday from Ivan Fox. Recent work-outs at Pimlico. Weather clear, track fast.
