KING HEROD WILL NOT START IN DERBY. Grant Hugh Brownes Colt Is Ailing Since an Accident After Race Last Friday. New York. Hay 8 -King Herod. Grant Hugh Hrowties candidate for the Kentucky Derby, to be run at Churchill Downs next Saturday, will not be a starter. Intil liis race Friday, when he made a bad showing ngainat Ral Parrs Crimper, Mr. iirowne ami trainer McDaniel were both sweet on his chances and a special car had banal engaged to take the son of Colin to LouisviBe from the Pimlico track. Mr. Browne, at Ids Goshen estate yesterday, said that lie had decided not to start his colt because of his coining out of the Friday race in rather bad condition. While lie was on his way for a warm-up before the race Friday, he became frightened at a ■ a ling umbrella and hfempad the gate at the track. At the time it was thought that he had not been hurt and lie was started. He did not run his race and he came back slightly lame. Saturday the colt was not himself and it was decided to forego the rich Derby rather than racing him when he was plainly not fit for such n contest. Browne considers his lameness only temporary, but it is sufficient to throw him out of such a bruising race as the Kentucky Derby is sure to produce.
