TRAINING FOR THE KINGS PLATE. Seagram Stable Appears to Have Big Edge on Race Figuring on Last Years Form, Toronto. Out.. May S. — The race for the Kings Plate at Woodbine is only ten days away, and there is little as yet upon which to base any speculation as to the probable winner. At present, of course, the Seagram stable is considered to have a big edge on the others on last years form. The rail-birds, although they have yet to see the Waterloo string in action this year, still have holies of their representatives repenting the success of Mandarin last year. This supposition is simply based upon their form of last year as two-year olds and the reports from the Seagram farm that they are all training well this spring. In Galley Head and Stunlee the Ontario Jockey Club president has two good colls, and there is no ilisputiig that Belle Malune, Gidd Galore and Gala Dress are all smart fillies. Statim has also performed creditably. Fl.ittiring reports are to hand from Barrio legard ing the Brookdalo Stables Tcrahera. the star of Unstring and the stables most likely candidate for tie-Kings Plate. There is no doubt but that she is a smart filly, and many are pinning their faith to the half-sister of Heresy to deliver the goods in the final test. Major Goodhams Captain B. Works Well. The feature of the work of the Kings Plata can didates :it Woodbine Saturday was that of Major Ross Goodhanis Captain B. Over a slow track and outside ••the dogs" he was sent a mile in company with Al Austins Tito. The sou of St. Bass stepped the first quarter in 24-.-.. the half in .11 •"•.-,. the three-quarters in 1:38%, and the mile was reached in 1:51. The pair were well out in the center of the track, and under ordinary conditions the circuit of the course would have been covered lose to 1:48. This is the first time the colt has heea sent along at this distance by trainer Hairy Gid -dings. .Ir.. to wheal his performance was most satisfactory. Contrary to last year. Captain B. is showing a disposition to stay this spring, .-md he must be considered a keen factor for the Guineas. The Bcardmoro Platers also worked on Saturday. Ladder of Light, Fair Fox and Altar Fire pert in a mile in l:."iti. Smarty Cat went in 1154%, but Ringdove showed the smartest performance of the string when siie stepped her mile in 1:58. They wen- all working rather handily and are coming to hand satisfactorily to trainer ;eorge Cornell. The Thorncliflo Stables Plate representative Britannia, worked a mile in 1:18%, which has not been surpassed by any of the other Platers at the coarse. This is sutfieicnt to make her rank anion-, the contenders for the present. Oriana Does Not Fancy Muddy Going. Charles Crews Guineas candidate Oriana tailed off badly in her last work in the mud. It is just possible that she does md fancy that kind of going aa he* previous effort on the dry was promising. John Hyii-s Plate eaesaaee Ml Pi Me. met with an accident just before being brought to Woodhin--. and he was temporarily Crown out of training for neary two weeks. He was. in fact. lame, but is lew petag soundly again. The forced letup has practically eliminated him as a possible starter in the race. •I. C. Fletchers J. W. llunley. the brother to Hamilton, has failed to show any reason why lie should go in the race. McCoiburn and Twill Stream, in trainer John Nixons string, are coming along well. They showed a smart five-eighths last time out and may develop into keen factors before race day. Trainer Nixon has ,-in enviable reputation for training Plate winners, and his charges may furnish the unexpected. Commonada, a well known performer on the Canadian tracks, showed a smart mile at the Woodbine Saturday in 1:48. He appears to In- in good condition and can be depended upon to give a good account of himself on this circuit during the coming season. Opera Glass, the Irish horse in the Gildings stable, shapes up like a keen contender for some of the Canadian Stakes over a long route. He put in an easy mile ia 1:54. Opera Gbua is a pretty chestnut in color and stoutly built. He is BOt tall, but he is .ill horse. Thoughtful a Tine -Looking Colt. Sir John Beadrtee esree-year-eM Thoughtful his developed into a riae-luofciag eoH this spring. He is being taken along slov.lv bv trainer Eddie Wh.vte. I m hided in the Stormont string here is a smart plater in the three yeai old LI Bey. He is a well bred colt by Peep oDay and his dam. Lady Strath -more, won many races on the middle western tracks in the colors of T. p. Hayes during lor nclag career. .1. ;. Wagnons Bao developed a temperature of 103 after being worked Saturday at Woodbine. Golderest Boy. the ether member of his string, had a much higher temperature on Ids ,-irrival here from Baltimore, but he has rounded to nil right. The W Mac track was heavy and holding thN morning. Slow time was recorded in the work outs The D no nt horses arrived from Halite. The eight head from the stable of D. A. Camplxdl. which came down from Gait in barge of trainer Hanson, include the Kings Platers Dave Campbell and Gay Life. Ossary Maid. Dorothy Carlin, Gay Night, and the two-year-olds Alf Rogers, Gay Breeze and Gay Greetings.
