GRAND RAPIDS MEETING GAINS FAVOR. Over Throe Hundred Horses Now at the Track with Big Contingent Yet to Arrive. Grand Rapids. Mid... June 20. — Michigan horses bid fair to cut a wide figure in the racing which opens at Comstock Park next Wednesday. Michigan has been essentially a harness horse state, but from the reservations for stalls and the inquiries tlutt are coming in daily, there is also a strong love for the runners in the horaC breeding sections. One of the enthusiasts is V . J. Dowling. seen tary of the Bhiawaaaee County fair. Mr. Dowling is n breeder on a modest scale of thoroughbreds and has the horse Arcite as a sire on his farm. Mr. Dowling is ■hipping three two year-olds of his own breeding. In his letter he s:ns: "I am thoroughly interested in your meeting which 1 hope will put Michigan on the map for the sport of kings. I would rather win a race at Grand Rapids than elsewhere, because I firmly believe that the winning of Michigan-bred colts would create local interest that would be a great assistance in promoting future racing in Michigan." Owner Woods from Greenville also has two on the grounds, While Frank Karrington of Detroit and the Poland Stable from the same place will also be here. A car load from Jamaica, New York, wan shipped yesterday. In this car are the horses of Jack Thornby, C. N. Darke. J. Kelley, A. Wrispcn, A. F. Dayton and W. Keating. Late arrivals include tie- Nevada Stable, with Bank. Scarlet Oaks. Spokane Queen. Square Set. Minnow, Gladiola, Slippery Elm, Lantern, Divland, Tombola. Tickford and Star Shooter; J. H. Tevis, With. King Mart and Tantivy; C. B. Daniels, with Leah Cochran, Geo. Terrill and Riiiosta; J. J. Quinlan, with War Master and Ed Luce; A. C. McCafferty. with Bogy Johnson and Miss Waters; L. A Capps. with Mr. Mack, Glitter and Meelicka ; K. ... Ixwis with Maznik: C. F. Brant, with Fairly, Baby Rasch and HI Capitano; H. Boyle, with January and Jubal. and W. J. Lambert, with Near, Zip. Notate and Natty. There are already 200 horses stabled on the grounds and the Hamilton and I atonia contingents are yet to come. Most of the horses from Hamilton will be shipped Saturday night. The Gibson and Keene consignment will come in the same car.
