June 29.— The private sale of fourteen yearlings by John E. Madden to Willis Sharpe Kilmer at his Hamburg Place Farm, announced by the prominent breeder at the Aqueduct track Tuesday. was ..ne of the largest private sales of thorough bred yearlings in recent ream, the fourteen, all by Ogden, bringing a total of 2,500. or the high average of 0.ll?l for each. This makes it look as if the home breeding industry were looking up, for When a breeder has the sires and broodmares on his own farm there must be a profit in turning them out .11 orer ,000 a head. If will be universally acknowledged that Ogden is a sire of altogether exceptional merit. He is the only horse eve/ imported to this country that won the Futurity and his famous chestnut son Sir Martin, by Hanover Sterling, was the only Anieri can colt that ever went to the post prime favorite for the Epaom Derby, the English blue ribbon of the turf. How Sir .M.i ill 11 lost the raei- through mere bad luck is ancient history, but that he was one of tic ureateat horses of his day and generation long ago has been unanimously accept d by the leading turfmen of all countries. Ogdcns rare repute as a sire is far from resting solely on tie- claim established by Sir Martin. He has been a wonderfully consistent sire of high class winners throughout his long and .successful career in the stud and horsemen all over the country are earnestly hoping that he may continue his triumphs as a sire for many years to come. It will be seen by glancing at the list of yearlings included in this sab. that while tiny are not foaled by the real star matrons of the turf, the dams In this list have produced many ueefal winters and tar/eta of year lings well know that it is a far cry from a good-looking and well-bred yearling to a winner of real Mr. Kilmer Deserving of Unqualified Success. It appears as if Mr. Kilmer has made a really enterprising purchase and his liberality and intelli- gence in buying such an expensive band of the gel of Ogden will be looked Upon as xvell deserving of UaquaUfied success. Among the broodmares which Contributed to this consignment are Lady Alberta, Ihnre dam of that useful racehorse, Leo Skolny, Bone of Gold, another of the broodmares represented, produced besides Delegate, the smart two-j year old. Gold Tassel, by Star Shoot, which finished a close second to Thistle in the first race on Tuesdays card, and it was but a few days ago that she won a Creditable race. Olga Nethersole is well-1 known as a frequent and highly successful producer, and so is White Owl.
