GENERAL NEWS NOTES OF THE DAY. President Wilson stepped iuto the prohibition fight over the food bill yesterday, partly to save the measure from a row between the contending factions and partly to get a law he believes the country will approve. The president told senate leaders lie agreed with the proposal to stop manufacture of foodstuffs into whisky and gin, but did not. believe the brewing of beer and manufacture of light wines should be stopped now. A provision to prohibit distilling and to empower the president to stop brewing and wine making when he considers It necessary, he told the senate leaders today, ho believed would satisfy prohibitionists and also the country. An amendment to that effect will be introduced later with prospects of adoptlou. The private bank of Graham and Sons, 659 West Madison street, the largest institution of its kind in Chicago, closed its doors unexpectedly yesterday afternoon and suspended business. Officers of the bank departed wtihout explaining their action. Attorneys and partners met soon after in the office of Roger C. Sullivan, where a statement was prepared. The Craham bank, according to reports in. financial circles, had deposits of from ,000,000 to ,000,000 and was supposed to be one of the soundest private banks in the state, t President Wilson yeste-day asked congress to pass ■ law to permit Brand Whitloek, American minister to Belgium, to accept a decoration from King Albert of Belgium in recognition of his marked services to the little kingdom. Decoration of any American official without sanction of congress is prohibited by law. From Athens comes the following dispatch: The Greek government has broken off diplomatic relations with Germany. AuMiia Hungary. Bulgaria and Turkey. Though war has not yet been declared, the Greek government -considers that a state of war exists since its advi-nt to power yesterday.
