CINCINNATI TROPHY TO BE RUN TODAY. Rivalry of Escoba and Viva America Exciting Keen Interest and Much Diversity of Opinion. Latonia, Ky., June 29. — The richest two-year-old stake in the west, the Cincinnati Trophy. Which has ,000 added, will be run tomorrow at the local track. Speed and gnmene-s, : thoroughbreds most valuable assets, will be given a test in this race, as it is at three-i|uarters and it will mark the first time this year that the youngsters have been asked to go that far in this section. When the Cincinnati Trophy was inaugurated in 1902. it was the aim of the Latonia Jockey Club to make it a race to settle the ■UPffSCJ in the two-year-old division in the west and it has served its purpose well eaeli year. From IMS until 1913 it was run at five and see -halt furlongs and in the latter year, when it was won by old Boscpod, which the following year won the Kentucky Derby, it was increased to I hies unsilfis Tliis was the first yen! that the handsome silver service or loving cup. a real trophy, was added to it and for tiie past four years the owners of the winning horses of the big two-year old stake, have received a trophy costing in the neighborhood of .ooo. The prize to lie givn to the winning owner this year, has been on display in the window of one of Cincinnatis leading clothing houses for a few days past and it has been admired by thousands of p oiih. It is a solid silver CHp and something that anybody would be proud to own. With lit! nominations to the stake this year, it should be worth in the vicinity of 1917.sh,000 to the winner, as it costs 0 to name a horse for it and additional to start. The owners of the youngsters in Kentucky were most liberal in making nominations for it. not only because of its big monetary value, but because of the trophy and because of the fact that the winner of this race is looked upon as a champion in these parts. Many of the horses named for it were bred by their respective owners and those breeders figure what a fiat lor it Woald be in their cap. to breed the winner of such an event. Since the stake was made a three-quarters dash, it has been won only once by a filly and that was hut year, when Major Thomas C. Mi I. .wells Aanri i.i ■eared from Harry Kelly. This year the filly division will have a strong hand to play, with two such as Viva America and Ocean Sweep contenting for it and any colt or reading. Which beats this pair. Can be put dawn as a high class JlwngsDl To date Viva America has not tasted defeat and she has l eaten her opponents so easily in her various races than even her owner. C. T. Worthing-toii. is not aware of the full extent of her spied. PeW natal s have ever raced that leave the barrier as fast as she does, and it seems as though she leaves it in her full stride.. Thus far she has just been nursed along through the last part of the race. Distance Will Suit Ocean Sweep. Ocean Sweep won the Debutante Stakes at Louisville by going to the front, but since that time she has shown an inclination to begin slowly and finish with a terrific rush. In her most recent win here she came from far bach to bent a high-class band of two-year-olds and was going au.iy fast at the end of f ive-eighths. The threo-i|uarters of the Cincinnati Trophy race will suit her to a nicety. Owner 0 targe J. Long and a large party of friends will come up from Louisville to see the danghter of PWMip — Ocean Blue race in the trophy, and Mr. Long would be one of the happiest men in America to win it with her. on account of the loving cap, even if there was no money attached to the event. Because of his three stake victories this spring to date, the Idle Hour. Banhfotd Manor and Harold Stakes. Escoba is the most favored by the talent overnight for the race. ile showed, recently that it does Bat matter to him which way a race is run. as he can go to the front or come from behind, but there are not many who lielieve that, he can outrun Viva America froni the start. There is no question of his game-in ss. however, and lie figures to be running Caster at the end than at the beginning. Many turf mi u have made personal wagers on the outcome of tin-race between these two horses and opinion is pretty well divided, as to which is the best, and it will take the running of the Cincinnati Trophy to decide it. Because of the unusually largo number of out-of-town turf enthusiasts who will come to witness the running of the Trophy. General Manager John Hachmcister lias made arrangements for the placing of a number of additional pari-mutuel machines and cashiers booths on the lawn, so as to give all of those speculatively inclined a chance to wager. Cincinnati Trophy day ranks next to Derby-day with the local racing pspalaca and. with such an excellent field to contest for the big prize as will go to the post tomorrow, it would not be surprising if the attendance ran close to that of li rbj day. There is one consolation for the Kentnckians in the running of this stake and that is they will lave it among themselves, as tiie Eastern stables all have taken their departure. Judge A Hie W. Young, of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, who recently entered the ranks of the owners, did not have to wait long to see his colors finish in the money, as Dr. Nickell, his two -year -old English Lad — Santa Susanna colt, accomplished this feat by landing in third place in a recent maiden race. Judge Young has another two-year-old, Dr. Blair, a chestnut colt by English Lad— Beautiful Bess. Hoth were bred by W. E. Phillips, patrol judge at the two Louisville tracks and Latonia.
