HAPPENINGS AT CHURCHILL DOWNS Dan Lehan to Race a Stable of His Own Owner Brooks Has Daddy Holberts Brother. By C. A. Bergin. Louisville, Ky., September S. Dan Lehan, who recently severed his connection with the racing firm of Middleton and Jones, is to race some horses in his own colors on the Kentucky tracks. He has a small stable of young horses with which he expects to pick np a few purses. The star of the new collection is Now Then, a three-year-old colt that has not as yet figured in any winning contests, but which gives promise of developing into a good breadwinner. Lucy J., and Victoria Scott comprise, a pair of two-year-olds that will be seen under the Lehan colors this fall. Neither of these youngsters has shown anything sensational in races, but in their private trials have given indication of much promise for the future. Mr. Lehan also has in charge several horses the property of A. P. Humphrey, Jr., who formerly owned the good mare Bronzewing, which was trained by Mr. Lehan. R. P. Brooks, who developed and trained Daddy Holbert and quite recently sold the horse to Geo. Senn for a goodly amount, has at his barn at the Downs a brother to Daddy Holbert. that he has every reason to believe will develop into as good a racer. This is a bay gelding two-year-old, by Little Dutch Cloisteress, which has yet to face the barrier. The youngster is named Nod Millright and iii his morning gallops he has been "burning up" the Downs track. Other horses under the care of Brooks are: Miss Agnes, Jean K. and Rachel AVarfield, all two-year-olds, and the three-year-old King Belle. This last named" filly has this year won once and been second twice in five starts. During his recent visit to Lexington, Tom Murphy, in charge of the Kentucky division of the A. K. Macomber stable, arranged to ship from Beaumont Farm to the Downs the yiree-year-old Pai-cines, half brother to AArar Cloud, by Sunsfar Dreamy, and a couple of two-year-olds. The Cock which has been in training at the Downs, will be sent back to the farm, having developed a bowed tendon. Al Bailer has arrived at Churchill Downs from Latonia, bringing with him three horses, which will be raced during the local season. Sol Gilsey, the three-year-old that Bailer lost out of a selling race at Latonia, is again the property of his former oAvner and appears to be in good condition. Bailer also has the three-year-old Alexander, owned by Fred -Good of Cincinnati and the two-year-old Edith L., which has fully recovered from the spell of sickness that kept her in her stall during the spring season of racing. AVhile at Latonia, Bailer had a narrow escape from probable fatal injury, when Sol Gilsey kicked him on the right side of the temple. The doctor attending Bailer declared that had the blow been struck an inch away, it might have terminated fatally. MANY REQUESTS FOR RESERVATIONS. Requests for reservations of stalls continue to .pour into, track superintendent Tom Young. The latest applicants are AV. C. AVeant, who has wired from St. Louis for fifteen stalls and AVilliam "Red" Walker, who sends a request from Toronto for ten stalls. Among the number that Weant will bring here are Stelcliff, Alrginia AV., Iolite and Bachelors Blend. Other owners, who will ship direct from St. Louis to Churchill Downs are H. J. Seiden-eck, II. T. Batchler, AVoodman Bros., J. B. Goodman, G. Jj. Strang and H. Neusteter. Nominations td the Cherokee nnd the Golden Rod Stakes, both of which are to be decided at the forthcoming autumn meeting at Churchill Downs, have been announced by Secretary H. C. Applegate. The first-named drew thirty-six entries, while the latter attracted twenty-five nominations, showing a slight increase for each stake over last years list. The Cherokee is for three-year-olds and over, and is at one mile and one-sixteenth. The Golden Rod is for . two-year-olds and is the only juvenile stake of the autumn season. It is at three-quarters of a mile with selling conditions. Last years renewal of the Cherokee was won by AV. H.
