SARATOGAS SECOND MONDAY Week Opens with Fast Racing and Capital Attendance. Tody Springs Surprise in Winning the Troy Stakes Gnome Proves to Be Good Colt. m"ti BY J. ti. DEMPSEY. , SARATOGA. N. Y., August 9. A first-time starter and a maiden jockey formed a winning combination and furnished an outstanding surprise In connection witli todays racing. The incident came when W. P. Burchs filly Tody, by Bard of Hope Telle Doe, ridden by Evans, scurried home tin advance of the others in the Troy Stakes at five and a half furlongs for two-year-olds of the selling plater class. The race had a net value of ,950. The winner had a full share of support, particularly from the Virginia and Washington contingent, and she raced like a right good filly. She was off none too forwardly, but gradually worked her way to the front and in the stretch downed the leader. Guvnor, decisively and won, with much speed to spare from Our Flag, which overhauled Guvnor in the last seventy yards for second place. Guvnor displayed a great flight of early speed and 011 the stretcli turn seemed a certain winner, but lie shortened his stride perceptibly in the last eighth. He ruled favorite and, in addition to losing a substantial wager, owner Loft also lost the horse via the claiming route, F. J. Kelley securing him for 100. The winner in this was E. R. Bradleys Best Pal, which displayed a high-class performance in scoring in the hollow fashion lie did. The West figured oustandingly in the results, as Under Fire landed in second place and Bridesman third. The West began auspiciously when A. N. Akin took the opening race from Arnold after the latter appeared to have the rase at his mercy. He took a good lead at once and in the last eighth appeared to bo only cantering, but he tired fast in the last fifty yards, and A. N. Akin, coming with a rush under Garners skillful ride, got up in time to win by a head. Belgian Queen enabled jockey S. Bullman to graduate from the maiJon ranks when she showed the way to the others for the entire way in the fifth race. Bullman showed a capable ride for a green youngster and saved much ground with the filly on all the turns. Liola landed in second place and Lads Love finished third. GNOMES FAST MILE Gnome showed himself to be a right smart racer by taking the mile dash in hollow style from a slow beginning and winning easily from Wyoming and Carpet Sweeper in the fast time- of 1:30. Jock Scot, with an advantage at the start, showed much early speed, but retired when Gnome headed him, and faded fast in the stretch. Yeomanette, one of John Sanfords representatives, unseated Josialt while , at the post and ran riderless for a quarter before being caught, but caused nc damage to the rider, who remounted her. John Morris, who rates a string of , Horses on the western circuit, was an arrival from Tulsa, and is in quest of some racing material. J. J. Samuel C. Nuckols,. Jr., who serves as One of " the stewards at Kentucky tracks, departed this morning for Kentucky via automobile, accompanied by his brother. G. W. Forman has added to his stable the two-year-old Fitzboodle by private purchase from Gif-ford Cochran. Fred Gerhardy arrived this morning from Detroit with the program book of the coming Windsor meeting, also to accept entries in the valuable stikes that are offered at this Canadian track. Brotherly Love came out of his race. Saturday slightly bowed, which will keep him out of racing for some time. Capt. Goodloe McDowell and his bride were among the visitors and will make an extended visit as gnests of Thomas C. McDowell. Trainer Fred Burlew was receiving congratulations of his many friends during the afternoon over having married Miss Estelle Cookston bf St. Louis.
