FAVORITE FOR THE FUTURITY PRUDERY, QUEEN OF THE TWO-YEAR-OLD FILLIES OF THE YEAR, APPEARS A PROBABLE WINNER OF THE FAMOUS RACE By EXILE Prudery, queen of the two-year-old iillies of the year, is the popular favorite for the famous Futurity, to be run at Belmont Park Saturday. She was, without doubt, the best horse in the Hopeful Stakes, despite her defeat by Leonardo II., and, witli riders reversed, would have won. She has no Leonardo II., nor Inchcape nor Tryster to meet in the Futurity, and unless some unknown star suddenly appears in the Armament this brilliant daughter of Peter Pan should carry olt the rich prize. Prudery has won five out of seven races and 3,050. Victory in the Futurity would bring her total above 1920.sh0,000 and place her second to Man o AVar on the list of the money-winning horses of the year. She is a bay daughter of Peter Pan and Polly Flinders, by Burgomaster, and bred, as you may observe, Eclipse to Herod. Peter Pan lias during his stud life only attained to rather fluctuating success as a sire and, in my opinion, at least, the best has not yet been seen of him in this particular, for he is a wonderfully well-bred horse, especially on his dams side, being from Von Tromps dam Cinderella, by Hermit, and his granddam, Mazurka, by the Cambridgeshire winner See Saw, from Mabille, sister to the Grand Prix and Derby winner, Cremorue, by Parmesan, and this the Rigolboche by Rataplan branch of the Burton Barb family, from which also come The Tetrarch, Sea King, sire of the Kentucky Derby winner Paul Jones; the champion Argentine sire Pietermaritzburg; Clyde, winner of Prix de Diane, and any number of others almost as good. Polly Flinders, dam of Prudery, as is the case with so many mares whose sons and daughters have attained to much turf distinction, achieved but slight success on the turf, winning but one race and this as a two-year-old, at Hamilton, Canada. Polly Flinders, however, is a really well-bred mare and in breeding to a marc you breed to the blood and not to the individual, and is a daughter of that good son of Hamburg, Burgomaster, which unfortunately was sent south to Chile not so many years gone by. Burgomasters dam, Hurley Burley, a good winner in her day, is by the Kentucky Derby winner Riley, and also bred Mineola, dam of the Saratoga Cup and Lawrence Realization winner Johren. Slippers, granddam of Prudery, is by Meddler, which stood third to Rock Sand and Hanover on the winning; brood mare sire list of 1919, and this year so far is first, twenty-four of his --. daughters having rcd.ltliictytworw-lnnerKof- flftyse.venrraces--ofOT2i - Opinions do not cut much figure in horse breeding. Fact is the only thing that really counts. Meddler is bred to be and is one of the best brood mare sires ever imported, and, besides, he also looks the part. Not only in this country, but also in France, are his daughters proving their .worth as brood mares, for is not Mr. Macombers recent good winner, Meddlesome Maid, from Meddlers daughter. Colonial Girl? Imported Cinderella, dam of Slippers, also bred Hastings, sire of Fair Play, Handsome, Glenheim, Plaudit, Ferrier, Foreigner and others, and Prudery, a member of the Moonah Barb No. 21 family, from which come also the Cup horse The White Knight, Diuneford, all the Bachelor tribe in Ireland, the Oaks winner Lonely, the Australian sire success Malster, imported Tranby, that good French horse Boiard, and Macaronis sire, Sweetmeat. There can be no doubt that bloodstock, as bred in this country, is now in every way superior to that which has done duty for so long. There is, however, still room for improvement, and this, too, "will come, because of the fact that racing over a distance of ground is becoming more popular with each succeeding year, and breeding really tells best when racing over a distance of ground. Moreover, as announced in Daily Racing Form, it is Major Belmonts intention to institute a Belmont Park Cup, which will rival in importance-the Cup run for on Ascots classic heath.
