FIFTEEN YEARLINGS AT NAPA STUD Band of Young Runnymedes in Preparation for Next Year of Unusual Promise. BY F. L. McKENNEY. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., September 9. Under the able tutelage of trainer C. W. "Bill" Carroll fifteen highly bred yearlings, products of Adolph B. Spreckels famous Napa Stock Farm, are being given their primary education as race horses every morning at the picturesque home course. The youngsters are filling out and developing fast under the carefully prepared course of training that has been mapped out for them. Carroll, who has been handling young thoroughbreds for Mr. Spreckels for a score of years with marked success, unhesitatingly says this years band is by far the best ever bred at Napa. He is confident there is more than one Dr. Leggo or Snngallo in the band and, with a fair measure of good fortune when the "babies" get to racing, it seems his hopes will be realized. Its been amply proved by the performances of the progeny of the Voter stallion Runnymede last year and in the present year that Mr. Spreckels made a "ten strike" in acquiring that sturdy young horse. Of the yearlings at the farm twelve are by Runnymede and the other three by the Solitaire II. horse Voorhees, well remembered as a racer of good class on eastern tracks. The Runnymedes all possess speed, and that in plenty, and indications are they will go on when asked. Last year the handsome son of Voter and Running Stream, by Domino, had five sons and daughters at the races his first and every one won. This year ten of his two-year-olds faced the barrier and six were returned winners. The remaining four met with reverses, or they, too, undoubtedly would have dene something worth while. The fillies predominate among the yearlings, as there are nine as against six colts. The Runnymedes are uniformly of good bone and substance, well muscled, deep in the heart, with well set on head and, oest of all, of the sweetest disposition. Both trainer Carroll and jockey Jack Motcalf, who is galloping the youngsters, say they never had a more pleasing band to handle. AH the horsemen that have scan the youngsters agree California has produced few horses that "fill the eye" in every particular as do these yearlings. All look the part of the aristocrats they are, with not a plebeian among them. HIGHEST TYPE OF THOROUGHBRED. A beautifully turned chestnut -colt by Runnymede, dam the Salvation mare Salvatrix, is of the highest type of thoroughbred. He has height, length, fine forehead, intelligent eye, remarkably good shoulder and all the other characteristics one associates with a real race horse. His gallops have shown, too, that he is a runner, as are all the sons and daughters of Salvatrix, one of the most successful matrons at Napa Stock Farm. The mare is in an adjoining paddock to that of her yearling son witli a trim young miss by her side, her ninth foal. Salvatrix is by Salvators son Salvation, dam the Brutus mare Installatrix, and in her veins runs the best English and American racing blood. In other years she foaled the winners Madge F., Savilla, Harbard, Venetia and others. This year the speedy two-year-old filly Runatrix won for her on New York tracks. A sister to the, frequent winner Madeline Lillian, being by Runnymede Napa Girl, by Solitaire II., is a filly built on handsome lines. In well formed neck and stoutly knit frame, she bears a remarkable resemblance to her daddy. Then there is a well put up filly, bay iu color, also by Runnymede, dam the Big Chief . mare Abbas, that promises much, both by her distinctly racing lines and her fast gallops. She is a half-sister to the two-year-old filly Charlotte C, which has won recently on Canadian tracks. The matron Abbas has an especially warm spot in Mr. Spreckels heart, as she is a daughter of Candid, a mare that was imported from Australia and won at four miles in his colors. Daughters of the Star Shoot mares Pourquoi and Micco are "pals" in one of the spacious paddocks at the farm. They possess that intangible something usually termed "quality." These fillies are sisters to a number of winners. The Pourquoi filly is a sister to the two-year-old winner Runquoi and half-sister to Legotal, while the Micco miss is a sister to the two-year-old winner Runmic. Runnymedes blood blends just right with that of daughters of Star Shoot, as his second dam Dancing Water is by Isonomy, the sire of Isinglass, sire of Star Shoot. The breeding of the yearlings follows: Chestnut colt, by Runnymede Salvatrix, by Salvation. Chestnut colt, by Runnymede Zafra, by Solitaire II. Chestnut oolt, by Runnymede Olathe, by Solitaire II. Brown colt, by Runnymede Hymir, by Dr. Leggo. Brown colt, by Voorhees Meana, by Puryear D. Bay colt, by Voorhees Breslau, by Uncle. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Pourquoi, by Star Shoot. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Nanna, by Puryear D. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Micco, by Star Shoot. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Ventura, by Puryear D. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Lady Athcling, by Atheling. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Handsome Florrie, by Handsome. Bay filly, by Voorhees Egerla, by Clifford. Bay filly, ly Runnymede Abbas, by Big Chief. Chestnut filly, by Runnymede Napa Girl,- by Solitaire II.
