w TETRATEMA FASTER THAN DIADEM Clearly Demonstrated in Their Race at "Weight for Age at Goodwood, Among the few bright features of the Goodwood .week the duel letween Tetratema and Diadem alone made tiie meeting memorable. While being a winner of the One Thousand Guineas, Diadem might not pass muster perhaps Avrli exacting critics as being of higher than the best handicap rank, and between that and the classic degree there is a sharply ciividing line. At weight for age and sex Tetratema was found always just too good for Diadem, and although he may have liked the soft going the least of the two, he won through being a naturally quicker beginner. The mare is now at a time of life when most good ones are retired to another sphere, and if still able to display weight-carrying ability such as makes her appear to be as good as ever she was at the judges end, it was seen in the King George Stakes that Tetratema had reaped a big advantage in the early stages, and such lie certainly would not have done had he been paired with Irish Elegance as we knew that horse last year. At three-quarters, however, Tetratema is the champion of the time at weight for age on sound going, and he might beat all comers under the same conditions up to a mile. In the Eclipse. Allenby led him for that distance, but I fancy it was only by the courtesy of Carslake, who made up his mind some time ago that the other colt was deficient in stamina, like his own mount, and played to beat him for speed. Captain Maehcll used to say that every horses best distances could be measured to the length of a walking-stick, granted, of course, the test was a true one; and with Tetratemals distance now being so clearly revealed it would seem that he should never again suffer defeat, for we may not expect him to be on the tracks more than another season. The wonder, no doubt, to some people, by the way, is that Diadem is being raced for so lotig, and according to all accounts she has not finished yet. Although she has seen so much hard work she seems to be of more robust constitution than was Sceptre. The latters fires had paled during her final year. She would try to come witli that long run, but there was no life in it. Diadems latest effort when about the same age carried with it all her characteristic dash until she was eased just below the judges 1kx, and her heart has continued in racing for the reason that she has throughout been ridden with a discretion worthy of a Tom Cannon or a John Watts, who always believed that a generous mare should never be made to feel the whip.
