Steeplechase Thriller Satisfactory Compromise Reached in Matter of Increased Purses. in ptlj MONTREAL, Quebec, September 9. Featured "by the thirteenth renewal of the Kings Plate, the Montreal Jockey Club threw open its gates for the fall meeting this afternoon. The running of the Plate resulted in a hollow victory for Commander J. K. L. Ross when his four-year-old Aconi galloped home an easy winner. Back of him and driving hard for second place came Mouette and All Amiss. There was a slight delay at the barrier, due to the fractiousness of Laurentian. When the field was dispatched Mouette elected to set the pace, while Nolan was content to follow with Aconi. At the far turn he went to the front and from there on left no doubt as to the outcome. Aconi was an overwhelmingly strong favorite and his victory was immensely popular. Ideal racing weather prevailed and a large-sized attendance journeyed to the course to witness the running of the opening day card. Despite the small size of the fields, spirited racing prevailed and the form backers had n profitable day. A thrilling .contest resulted from the running of the steeplechase. The winner turned up in Smith-field, with Old Bill Bender second. Decathlon ran out of the conrse at the tenth fence and upset his rider going to the twelfth. The horse was . remounted by- a stable assistant-and finished H. Williams lodged a claim of foul against the winner. Borgan carried him wide all the way. The. claim was not allowed. Francis Nelson today denied trainer Walsh the privilege of saddling All Amiss in the running of, the Plate. Trainer Walsh and jockey J. Smith were suspended by the stewards at the recent Kempton Park meeting for inconsistent running of the plater Red Post. Steeplechase jockey N. Brooks, while schooling one of trainer Healys jumpers through the field, fell and sustained a fractured collar bone. Francis Xelsxm, representing the Canadian Racing Associations, granted the following temporary licenses: Trainers, W. Devonshire, M. J. Ayer, D. Buchanan, C. Koerner, L. H. Tyron, J. J. Feeney and S. Veitcli. The following jockeys were also granted temporary . licenses: J. H. Glass, H. Williams, SI Veitch, Jr., F. Preece. B. Haynes- and C. Eames.- George Hay of the Ontario Jockey Club was an arrival this morning from Toronto in the interest of the steeplechases to be run at the Woodbine course. Mr. Hay is making arrangements for tho shipment of the timber toppers to that point at the conclusion of the present Blue Bonnets meeting. At a conference between the horsemen and Commander J. K. L. Ross as a director of The Jockey Club the horsemens reijuest for an increase in the monetary value of the purses was amicably settled. The agreement reached was that the purses as published in the condition book be continued, and in the event the first three days racing being successful the request for ,200 purses would be complied with. T. J. Elward was an arrival this morning from Saratoga Springs with two two-year-olds. Three carloads arrived this morning from Ottawa bringing the remainder of thoroughbreds that raced at the Connaught Park meeting. Starter Harry Morrissey, who replaces J. Milton on the Canadian circuit, arrived this morning. Mr. Morrissey came from Reno, nnd previous to leaving made arrangements with one of his assistants, H. Gilniore, to finish out the meeting at the Nevada capital. J. Donovan and E. Thomas accompanied Mr. Morrissey as assistants. Mr. Mortimer Malioney, in charge of the mutuel department, was an arrival this morning from Baltimore.
