GENERAL UNIFORMITY OF RACING FORTY PER CENT OF FA VORITES WIN ANNUALLY FIRST CHOICES MORE SUCCESSFUL ON EASTERN THAN ON WESTERN TRACKS . - i Statistics show that about forty per cent of first choices win annually. Thus in 1917, the small tracks around Baltimore not counted, the percentage was. .41, while in 1918 it was .40, making the average of .40. for the two years. Some tracks show high percentages each year, others much lower, the difference being attributed, to varying configuration and widths of the tracks in the main. The figures for the last four years show that favorites succeed oftcner on eastern than on western tracks. The Jamaica track always shows a high average of winning favorites, as also do Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Laurel and Saratoga. Empire City is more variable, as its .40 in 1917 and its .39 in 1918 illustrate. Pimlico is a bad track for favorites, its percentage for the two years being low at .33. Of the Kentucky tracks Lexington makes the best showing with .40 in 1917 and .40 in 1918, .or .43 for the two years. For the same two years Latonia shows .38"., Douglas Park .3S and Churchill Downs .30j all below normal, with Churchill Downs poor showing due to its low percentage of .32 in 1917. New Orleans racing of the two years is close to the normal mark at .39. Havre de Grace makes a good showing. In connection with this years racing the percentage of winning favorites is on a par with the preceding years despite the greatly increased number of races.
