LATONIA MEETING CLOSES Pif Jr. Captures the Latonia Gup for the Second Time. Lowers Track Record in a Fine Race Minute Man Runs Away " From Fast Opponents. : - ," BY. J. L. DEMRSEY. LATONIA, Ky-.;: October 30. The veteran Pif Jjv. carrying the silks of R, L. Baker arid ridden with masterly skill by Pool, was victor in the Latonia Cup, at two miles and a quarter, worth ,38.0 net mid featuring todays getaway racing. Minto II. landed second place and Donnacona barely lasted long, enough to finish in advance of Under Firei The time, 3:49,- represents a new track record and lowers the. former mark by one and one-lift"! seconds. It marked the second time that Pif Jr. had triumphed in the race, having previously won it.fouc : years :ago,; when he beat Star Hawk by a nose after, one of the most sensational of struggles. He was not called on to exert half the effort today that he did on the occasion when lie beat the Macomber representative, for the finish this afternoon found him moving along at a leisurely pace, thorough master of the situation, with Pool looking over his shoulder at the futile effort of Minto II. There was no material change in the "running of the first mile and a half, excepting that Minto II.s lead, "ovee Donnacona varied at stages from one to two lengths. Passing the stand for the second time. Pif, Jr. began moving up and shortly after that Donnacona seemed to crack badly and was to all appearances done for. Minto II.. however, was going easily, but. the next quarter found Fif Jr. installed in. the. lead, with -every indication that lie would continue his sweeping and undiminished stride. Minto IL made- ;a resolute effort to again wrest the commnnd -away, but the task was too much for him and Pif Jr. came away in the stretch to win easing up. Donnacona, when he began tiring, lost ground fast and only for the fact that Under Fire was more exhausted than he -was enabled him to- laud third place by a neck. A, crowd of almost record size witnessed the decision pf the race and the six other dashes that marked the close here. The popularity of long distance racing was manifest during the. running of the feature, for the big throng made the grounds resound witli their shouts each, time the fields Swept by the grand stand. Donnacona was an outstanding choice, but Pif Jr.s success was well taken and lie received an ovation oh- his return to the stand. The three-quarters handicap, serving as the secondary feature, resulted in the ; fastest race rua at this" meeting, with Minute Man- the victor ovei1 The Boy and Tippity -Wltchet- in -third- place. The winner showed high speed from the start and was under restraint at the finish. Tippity Witchet ran his usual honest race and closed an immense gap from a slow beginning. Jack Hare Jr;, which? has performed impressively in Ills recent races, was given,, a bungling ride, which cohtilbuted , to his failure, although the 128 pounds he had to carry also proved troublesome. TALISMAN IK HER. BEST FORMi Talisman raced in her best form this afternoon, and won without mucli effort in the opening race from Belle of Elizabethtown and Serbian. Miss Fontaine scored a lucky win in the fourth race when she outstayed Red Legs, for the latter was best and would have won but for .the. frequent interference he suffered from. Vice-President C. II. Berryman of the Thorbugli-bred -Horse Association lias called a meeting of the members for next Wednesday night at Louisville, at which time the New Orleans purse controversy will again come up and ether matters affecting racing ut winter tracks. The meeting will be held at the Seelbach Hotel. .. The final race, won by Sands of Pleasure, marked the termination of General Glenns racing career, for wlien he fell he broke" his shoulder and it "may enforce his destruction. Jockey II. King was much in the limelight, riding four of the winners. - J . - k By far the most successful autumn meeting ever held at this track was finished this afternoon and general manager Matt J. Winn of the Kentucky Jockey .Club, and resident manager Harry F. Brei-vogel of Latouiu, felt a justifiable pride over the results .obtained. The series of improvements intended for this track will be started before long aud when completed it will almost appear a new plant. The immense throngs that have daily viewed the sport have been convincing to the management more space is necessary and will figure largely in the coming reconstruction of the establishment. The grandstand will come in for a general alteration. Track and stables will also be given attention.. Knebelkamp and Ownbey, who intended shipping their horses to New Orleans next Tuesday, made an aqulsition to their string by privately purchasing Botheration from E. R. Bradley. Max Hirscli will ship the G, W. Loft, band that lie brought here, including Donnacona and Tippity Witchet, to Maryland tomorrow. . B. nC.
