FINALE AT EMPIRE CITY Racing Season of 1920 Over-New York Tracks Ended. Mad Hatter Easily Triumphs in Closing Day Feature Ensor Discredits Rumors. NEW YORK, N. Y., October 30. Weather near- . lug the freezing point failed to deter race goers from seeing the windup of racing around New York, . which took place nt Empire City toddy. While the sun was shining, the Wintry blasts called for heavy wraps on the part of the immense concourse which came to do homage to the thoroughbreds for the last time this year. The program was nothing worthy of comment, but tlie Yorktowh Handicnp gave evidence that Mad Hatter is just about tlie best horse now racing hereabouts over any distance more than a mile. In the feature Mad Hatter was opposed by Cromwell, " which easily defeated his stablemnte Cirrus a few days ago. War Note, an added starter. War Note was in at 95 pounds and set a fast pace for the first three-quarters, but was content after that to run second. Cromwell was highly considered by C. W. Moore and his stable connections, but sulked after racing well for about five-eighths iif a mile and finished last eight lengths back of War Note. Mad Hatter easily moved, to tlie front when called on and won without an apparent effort. In the opening dash Jockey Ensor, who had the mount on Santa Claus, one of the choices, was practically left at the post when the webbing arose. A rumor was quickly spread around tlie course that the premier jockey had imbibed too freely in Celebrating a certain birthday and that he was incapacitated. It. gained weight when Ensor, who is said to have been engaged to ri.de Edwiua in the Fashion Handicap, was replaced by C. II. Miller. As a consequence Edwiua, which had been made an equal favorite with Genie W. around 7 to 5 in the advance odds, was at more than 3 to 1 and Genie W. backed from an opening of even money to 1 to 2 at tlie close of operations. Incidentally neither Edwiua nor Genie W. finished in the money. Lady Gertrude turned up; the winner after a stirring stretch battle with La Rablee after the latter had got slowly away from the post. Tlie third money went to Head Over Heels, another long shot. When tlie official jockey board appeared for the fifth race it showed that jockey Ensor was scheduled to ride Tlie Wit. Tlie Wit, from aii opening of 7 to 10, went quickly to 9 to 10 and American Soldier was backed to equal favoritism with the OrmOndale geldthg. Ensor rode The Wit like tlie expert he is. Keeping his mount tinder restraint, lie" timed his move nicely and went to the front at the stretch bend to defeat American. Soldier easily by two and a half lengths. Ensor doffed his cap lightly to his admirers when he returned to weigh out and did not appear to be the least out of the normal. In tlie final race the oralizers again took liberties with Ensors mount Hard Guess, which resulted in the Butler colt winning easily from the long shot Gwendoln. Nebulous was the one to disappoint the "wise crackers" hi this race, having been backed from an opening, of 8 to 5 to 9 to 10. S. C. Hildretlis Regal Lodge, which has been on tlie shelf for the most of the year, was a prohibitive odds-oit choice in the second race, as he seemed to outclass his opponents. He had little trouble in winning the race, with Tng"-a-Ling second and Miss Orb third. . D. R. McDaniel claimed Lady Stella from the second race Friday for ,810. B. A. Lane has sold the Fair Play two-year-old filly Pluycaiiy to P; T. Chimr at - private terms. The filly will be retired for breeding purposes.
