QUEER AUSTRALIAN JUMPING RACE Slowcoach was responsible for a decidedly unusual performance at the recent Wellington, New Zealand, meeting. He started favorite . for the Wellington Steeplechase, three and a quarter miles, but balked after going two miles and refused again when his rider tried to drive him. He then returned to the paddock. Willi only one race intervening, he was broilght out again during the afternoon for the1 Winter Hurdles, two and a quarter miles; and a little-known .jockey had the mount. Loehella was favorite and Slowcoach but lightly supported. The latter, in winning, outpaced Locli-ellu from the last jump. Slowcoachs Win after doing about two miles over big fences earlier in the day may have really deserved applause, but tho.sj backers who lost on him in the first race aud then suffered again when . lie downed Loehella in the second did not see it In that light and indulged in prolonged hooting.
