NEWMARKET PLATE 257 YEARS OLD An historic race for the Newmarket, England. Town Cup produced a walk -over for Walter Griggs gelding Karabundum, Captain Simpson riding. October 9, on Newmarket Heath. The race was-in-stituted by King Charles. II. in 1003, and is thus 257 years old. Its prize is endowed with a parcel of land which brings a yearly rental of 0. This sum and the entries for the previous year 15 each, less for the clerk of the course and for the poor of Newmarket, constitute the prize. Under the terms of the endowment the Town Plate must be run forever on the Newmarket round course, starting at tlie July Stakes stand, at four miles, on the second Thursday of October yearly. The fundamental idea when the race was first made nvas to gather horses in a contest which could "gallop and stay." Last year Robert Sievier won the Town Plate with Green Falcon. This years walkover reduced the value of the race for 1921, because the starting fee of one year goes to increase the stakes for the next.
