ANGON THE PRIZE ACROBAT Continues on His Erratic Way by Defeating Bullet Proof. Cold Weather and Heavy Going Still Ruling at Jefferson Park, but the Racing Is Good. - ; i BY J. L. DEMPSEY. NEW ORLEANS, La., December 8. Lloyd Gentrys Angon figured in :i sparkling but acrobatic performance during the afternoon at Jefferson Park when, he accounted for the all age handicap at three-quarters, triumphing easily over Bullet Proof and administering he first defeat sustained by the latter during the present racing here. Angons race this afternoon was decidedly a form reversal over his last previous race, on which occasion he failed to get a part of the purse Bullet Proof winning with consummate ease. The going this afternoon was in Angons favor, but it also applied to Bullet Proof, which is held a superior mud runner. Angons racing this fall has about been the limit in inconsistency. Because of Bullet Proofs easy victory in their last meeting he ruled a pronounced favorite, but Angon held him safe at all points and came away in the stretch to win as his rider pleased. The early pace was made and forced by St. Quentin and Uncles Lassie, and the speed they displayed was responsible for the five and a half furlongs being covered in the good time of 1:08. Bleak, cold weather again served as a drawback to reduce the attendance, but a surprisingly large part of -theregulars made up the, assemblage. The trat-Tvas theTeIeITTiasWi itig, but the footing was uniform, resulting in a cessation of the riders guiding their mounts wide. As a matter of fact, the strip nearest the inner rail was the objective of all the jockeys. Form was well conserved and the racing was interesting, many of the finishes being hard fought, with small margins separating the winners and placed horses. Some of the dashes brought out fairly good starters, despite the difficult going. For the first time George J. Longs colors were carried to victory over this track when his Montillo won the opening dash by a short margin from Secretary, the favorite. Montillo ran like a fair colt for he held on in game style under hard riding. The one-time good colt Mormon made his debut in these parts an auspicious one and won in easy style in the second race from the outsider Safranor. Back Bay, backed in confident style, accounted for the third race from Opportunity. Back Bay was much the best in the going, for he came from far back from a slow beginning. Tugs furnished the surprise of the afternoon by beating Sasin home by a head, with H. C. Basch. next in the third race. The latter was supported to the exclusion of the others in the race. The colors of W. H. Rowe were carried to their first victory in the sixth race when Ballybell finished in advance of Bombast. Verity was a supposed good thing in this race, but ran a bad race. There were many additions this afternoon to the visiting brigade and included "Cull" Holland, who at one time figured extensively on the turf, but is now in the brokerage business in New York. Johnny Dundee was also among the newcomers from the East and will remain for the winter. Frank Farrow brought nine horses from Bowie. Before leaving the Maryland course he shipped Pol-roma and May W. to Ben Jones farm at Parnell. Missouri. Polroma is a son of Polymelus and is intended for stud service. The horse sickness at the Fair Grounds is still rampant and many horses stabled there continue on the ailing list. Jack Reeves and others owned by A. Swenke were among the horses to get in this afternoon from Bowie. Jockey Walls displayed some of his old-time riding skill astride Ballybell and Nebraska, winners of the two concluding races. "Bud" Fisher, noted cartoonist and owner of several good horses, which are now berp. was an arrival and will remain several weeks.
