CALVELEY A NOTED SIRE OF JUMPERS The death of Calveley, the best sire of steeplechase horses in Germany, is lately recorded. He had a notable career as a sire there. In all, his stock won over 1920.sh75,000 in stakes. . Bred by the late Duke of Westminster in 1895, Calveley was by St. Serf Sandiway, by Doncaster Clemence. Calveley won good English races, inclusive of the Great Yorkshire Handicap and Doncaster Cup, and he acted as schoolmaster for Flying Fox. At the famous Kingsclere sale after the dukes death Sir John Thursby gave 9,500 for Calveley, but after running twice unplaced he was sold to Germany, where nearly everything he got won over obstacles.
