The attendance was large and if the beginning of the season ... is a true line of what is in store for the club, -all A records will be broken this year. The most pretentious field of the day met in the fifth race, a dash of five-eighths of .a mile for an 00 purse. Osgoods well-known mud-running ability sent him to the post an even money favorite. When the running came, however, it was Different Eyes all the way, the son of The Manager holding his opponents safe throughout by a comfortable margin. Tlie inaugural dash was warmly contested every yard of the race. The General Roberts filly Two Eyes led all the way, but had no easy time of it, and after, racing in to defeat, first Tosca, then Bertha Minix just lasted to outstay the fast closing Draftsman in a game finish. Therei was another close finish in the second race, McLelland getting the decision over Timothy J. Hogan by a neck. Neither figured prominently in-, the early junninsj, Jbijt after: the. leaders lired, "they finished "fast Tind pasied"the others in the last few yards, with only the smallest of margins separating them at the end. Carmody and Waterford proved the winning combination in the third race, while Blazeaway. from tlie Armonia Stable, had no trouble showing the way in the fourth. The final dash of the afternoon fell to W. H. Halls Dolph, which easily took the measure of Jellison after the latter had set the pace practically throughout. With one exception all the eight horses which F. A. Herold brought from Bowie are two-year-olds. Among the youngsters are some good performers that showed winning form at the Maryland tracks, during the fall racing. The list of the younger horses comprises Pansy, Kings Belle, Hnonec, Wicklow, Lyric, Cornelia and Julieanne. Another horse in the stable is Chimera, a four-year-old. D. S. Fountain, who campaigned a fairly good stable on the local tracks last year, returned with four useful horses, which should win without much delay. They comprise the good breadwinners Mistress Polly, Black Top, Lariat and Silex II. T. Edwards, for the first time here, is campaigning the horses Napthnlius and Dantzig. T. A. McAvoy, trainer for Thomas Monahan, received word today that Mr. Monahan, accompanied by Col. M. J. Winn, general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club, will arrive in Havana shortly after Christmas on an extended visit. Among the probable starters are Right Angle, Pomerene, representatives of the Armonia Stable; Prince, of Como, Different Eyes, Marion Hollins, Furbelow, Brother Maclean, Osgood, Sinn Feiner, Ravanna, Aunt Deda and Liberty Bond.
