FNTRY 1 1 Ell 1Ell 1 ill Li Predicted for Kentucky Derby Nominations Closed Saturday Even Calibre of Last Years Juve ¬ niles and Avoidance of Conflict With Preakness the Reason LOUISVILLE Ky February 2G Predic ¬ tions are being made among the local turf fraternity that a record entry list has been received for this years Kentucky Derby which together with the other valuable stake races to be decided at Churchill Downs and Lalonia closed for nominations last Satur ¬ day dayThese These predictions are based chiefly on the fact that there was no outstanding twoyear old last year such as Morvich Tryster Man o War Eternal and Sun Briar in the pro ¬ ceeding years and as a consequence owners of any threeyearold of any promise what ¬ ever will be more inclined to enter it in Kentuckys most famous race Another fac ¬ tor that may be reflected in more numerous nominations from the East is that the run ¬ ning of the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby will not take place on the same day as was the case last year yearIt It is conceded on all sides that in electing to defer the running of the fortyninth Ken ¬ tucky Derby until the second Saturday of the coming spring meeting of the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs general manager Matt T Winn made a master stroke that will prove popular with the public and horsemen alike alikeThe The Kentucky Derby which closed Satur ¬ day will have an added money value of 50 000 with an addendum of approximately 5000 in gold plate It will be run on May 19 and it will be found when the returns from the numerous sources from which en ¬ tries may reasonably be expected that it will have attracted not only all of the best twoyearolds of last year but many of those which failed for one reason or another as juveniles but which have grown and de ¬ veloped over winter into such promising in ¬ dividuals as to warrant their being named for this rich prize prizeIn In the past the Kentucky Derby has been run as an opening day feature of the Churchill Downs spring meeting and until last year it was run several days ahead of the decision of the Preakness Last year the Derby and the Preakness were renewed on the same day with the result that Mor vidu the Derby winner could not start in the Preakness nor was Pillory the Preakness winner able to contest the Derby In con ¬ sequence of this unlucky contretemps each great special suffered as regards the quality of its field Both were cheated of some ¬ thing of interest interestHOUSES HOUSES IX HOTH CONTESTS CONTESTSThis This coming spring the Preakness will be revived on May 12 getaway day at Pim lico track Baltimore Immediately after its finish it is not unlikely that the winner and a number of others of both sexes that show best in it will go to Churchill Downs to recuperate for a meeting in the Derby with sundry colts and fillies of Kentucky KentuckyThe The Chesapeake a 5000 race of one mile and a sixteenth of the Havre de Grace April program and the Blue Grass Stakes with JUOOO added at one mile and an eighth of the Lexington meeting have for years been Kentucky Derby preliminary and elimination contests Three years ago Hal Parrs Paul Jones after an
