MARTINEZ DAY OF GLORY Leaves Hospital to Ride Abadane to His Sixth Straight Victory Irwin Standard Bearer Captures Speed Han ¬ dicap Incidentally Establishing 3Tew Track Kccord for the Distance SAN DIEGO Cal February 26 In the old Roman days when men fought for fight ¬ ings sake they bad laurels for the victor but in the annals of the turf if ever a rider deserved the wellknown wreath it was joc ¬ key Pablo Martinez at the Tijuana race track Sunday afternoon afternoonHe He rode Abadane one of the Irwin entry to victory in the Speed Handicap at five and onehalf furlongs This had added money of 2500 and was worth the sum of 2895 to the winner winnerThe The crowded race plant of Sunday after ¬ noon will grow old to recall to such a ride as Martinez old reliable horseman that he is gave the winner Pie took all kinds of chances rode with intelligence and when it was all over with Abadane a winner by one and onehalf lengths from Oil Man there was a new track record The time was 1 05 which is onefifth of a second better than the mark held jointly by Sangallo and Knighthood KnighthoodTurn Turn to the ward of a local hospital for a brief moment This rider Martinez had been confined to a bed for ten days suffer ¬ ing from an attack of pneumonia Against the advice of his physician he pleaded with the learned man of medicine to be allowed to ride Abadane Sunday He pointed to the fact that Abadane was slated to carry 122 pounds and promised to wrap up as warm as an Eskimo and that as sooft as his task was done he would return to the hospital again This he did The odor of the sick room was about him He seemed pale and drawn as he mounted Abadane but this Martinez is a horseman who like many sons of Mexico are virtually born in the saddie and he was returning to his first love How he rode FEYLAXCE THE FAVORITE FAVORITENow Now to the race Ten thoroughbreds trained to the minute faced starter Mcrris seys barrier Irwin was represented by three runners namely Motor Cop Blind Baggage and his fivetime winner Abadane There was strength in this aggregation but still stillj j the public placed their faith in Feylance to down the trio He was the favorite in both the books and machines with Knighthood next in demand Then came the Irwin entry The start was a splendid one with Motor Cop and Blind Baggage first to show their blinkers in front Down the backstretch they straaked with Brilliant Ray in close pursuit Around the turn they still were masters of the situation Here it was that Abadane began his run In close quarters he raced but Martinez never even thought of taking back He encouraged the Irwin champion to go on with the result that by the time the stretch was reached he was in a position to overtake the leader This was Oil Man which had wrested the lead from the pacemakers Stride for stride these two j raced for a distance of about fifty yards when Abadane despite his crushing impost j drew away from his rival rivalThen Then amidst vociferous encouragement from thousands of throats mighty Abadane passed the judges a winner for the sixth straight time In second place raced Oil Continued oil second pugej MARTINEZ DAY OF GLORY Continued from first page Man struggling like the gamester he is to retain second place from Feylance which was crowding him hard at the end The lat ¬ ter ran a sparkling race His path in the early running was anything but a clear one and when he did find clear sailing he closed with such a rush that another stride would have witnessed him taking second honors honorsIt It was a great crowd that filed through the gates of the Tijuana course A card of eight races seven of which were at a mile or over witli the Speed Handicap the magnet that drew an attendance that taxed the ca ¬ pacity of the commodious plant Books and mutuels did a thrilling business and the clerks in both departments were forced to work at top speed to accommodate the thou ¬ sands that were speculatively inclined inclinedThe The weather was ideal and the course was at its best being fast and resilient resilientNext Next in importance in a racing way was the seventh race a mile handicap for three yearolds In this the Whitney and Bostwick entry consisting of Spot Cash and Tassel were heavily backed favorites with Paisley next in demand The other starters were almost friendless as they looked to be over ¬ matched However the favored ones were humbled before the speed of Doubtful This colt was recently acquired at a private sale by J H McCoolc from the Commander J K L Ross establishment and recorded a good performance He was admirably ridden by jockey W Pool who saved him in third place until the stretch turn was reached when lie sent him through next to the inside rail to take the lead When in front Doubt ¬ ful finished gamely but was tiring fast and just managed to last long enough to win by a neck from Spot Cash The latter raced sluggishly in the early running but in the last juartcr he came in with a terrific rush only to fail by a narrow margin Paisley which came in for extensive backing fin ¬ ished in last place His behavior while at the post was most unruly For six minutes he carried an assistant starter who had him by the chin strap around the track When he finally did get away he cut out the run ¬ ning for the major part of the journey When the stretch was reached it was ap ¬ parent that he iiau shot his bolt and the others passed him during the final run to tlie finish finishThe The sport was inaugurated with a mile dash for cheap horses in which Sallie Car ¬ ter and Santhia C finished heads apart In third placed raced Wann Girl which was coupled in the field with the winner winnerThe The talent were in Hue in tlie second when Balfour the favorite led Meteor and Hopover first past the winning post in easy fashion fashionThe The mile and a half contest provided one of the greatest struggles seen at Tijuana in many a day Usually these extra longdis ¬ tance races are won in hollow fashion Sucii was not the case Sunday for the finish was one of the hairraising variety Three horses namely Charley Boy Walter Dant and Dolph finished so close that any one of them could have been proclaimed the winner with ¬ out a dissenting voice from the onlookers As it happened Charley Boy the favorite was awarded first money with Walter Dant and Dolph but two noses away awayAfter After Obstinate had finished last in a field of thirteen in the fourth it was found that O Blank had lodged a claim for the mare accompanied by the sum of 900 900Triiner Triiner J H McKee worked the good horse Bon Homme threequarters of a mile after the first race in 1 20 The son of Sweep did not impress one with the trial as he was a most tired horse after making the short journey journeyAfter After riding Abadane to victory in the Speed Handicap jockey P Martinez was rushed back to St Josephs Hospital in a closed automobile in charge of his physician who accompanied him to the track Mar ¬ tinez is well on the road to recovery from his recent attack of pneumonia but his phy ¬ sician thought it best that he rest up for a few more days
