DERBY PREPARATION Cartoonist and In Memoriarr Work a Mile at Douglas Park Prince K Shows Wonderful Im ¬ provement Bo McMillan and Donges Look Good LOUISVILLE Ky March 2C Trainers a Churchill Downs and Douglas Park hav begun lengthening the trial distances or Ihei Derby charges In Memoriam and Cartoonist both quartered at Douglas Park are th first that have been asked to go a mile It Memoriam was timed that distance in 1 4S A and Cartoonist in 1 18 The course Sundaj morning over which these two prominent loca candidates were worked was a bit lumpy ant slow Both colts were unpaced and finishcc under restraint Cartoonist is unquestionably training soundly and trainer Alex Gordon probablj will leave the colt here to fill his engagemem in the Derby when he takes the Fisher string of twenty horses to New York along the middle of April That the son of Celt is highly considered by the stable connections is evidenced by the heavy backing on the big chestnut in the future books here ancT elsewhere He is a picture horse and when stripped docs not appear far from racing condition His coat is as glossy as silk ana his general allaround appearance denotes the class of the hightype thoroughbred Gordon has not been doing as much with Cartoonist as he did with Violinist last year as his experience with that colt has taught him not to get ready so hurriedly with horses of stake proportions proportionsItlG ItlG IMPRESSIVE COLTS COLTSCartoonist Cartoonist is a big colt but not as tall as In Memoriam which is nearly seventeen hands high He has though more substance in his makeup than the McGee colt In Memoriam though under the training of George Land is going to give a good ac ¬ count of himself He is doing fine and is a sure starter in the Derby barring accident His owner Carl Weidemann thinks so well of his chances that he has not missed pay Ing Douglas Park a visit every week the entire winter to sec how his Derby colt is getting along There has oeen some betting in the future books on In Memoriam as the opening odds of the futurists have been cut in two twoAt At Churchill Downs where Bo McMillan Donges Alice Blue Gown Chittagong Pra vus Actuary Park Hill Prince K Squan ¬ der Flintstone Sandy Hatch and other lesser lights are being prepared for the Derby there seems to be an opinion that Prince K is the form at the Downs While threequarters around 120 is the fastest Prince K has been asked to go he does it in a manner which speaks volumes for the good colt While the son of Mont dOr won approximately 15000 for the Marshall Brothers last year carrying high weights in most of his races he was raced when not in condition on many occa ¬ sions sionsNow Now he is a different looking colt Trained by degrees he has grown heavier and spread out wonderfully His flesh is as hard as nails and he looks as if he could run to the Rockies The public can be ap ¬ prised early that this is no sucker colt and time will prove it declared a veteran turf inan Sunday just after Prince K had been worked a half mile around 51 51WESTERN WESTERN DERHY HOPE HOPEJohn John S Ward who with former jockey Roscoe Goose is giving Donges recently dubbed the western Derby hope a careful preparation for the Derby and has the coit which figures probably the best of the west ¬ erners on last years form going great guns Donges was sent fiveeighths in 1 08 Sunday morning but he was not exactly set down as he worked out with Spinball a four yearold The two ran head and head for the entire route with Donges a shade in front at the pull up Donges is not a big colt but is rather of the blocky conforma ¬ tion of Melton his maternal grandfather He filled out considerably during the winter months and is in competent hands and they have already backed his chances for a goodly sum in the futures futuresBo Bo McMillan the big chestnut Ballot colt looks of Derby caliber and when he was off for a fiveeighths gallop Sunday morning the dockers caught him going the first quarter in 2G3i half in 54 and fiveeighths in 107 He has been in training at New Orleans all winter but not raced He is being handled carefully by Lou Cahn for great things and If looks go for anything Mr Cahn certainly will be rewarded rewardedJohn John E Maddens quartet of Derby eligible Squander Flintstone Dozer find Sandy 3 latch have only been galloped miles around 1 55 Trainer Chuck Walker Is going along slowly with the Madden stock Which is the best of the four is merely a quandary it is known though that Madden sold his most advanced Derby colt to a local turfman when he disposed of Pravus a few days ago This colt worked the fastest threequarters of any of the Derby eligibles Sunday wtien be ran the distance in 1 19 Dr C R Richards is training Pravus PravusMose Mose Goldblatt bought himself a Derby colt in Metric at the Hewitt sales unless all signs fail The colt is now at Churchill Downs and is being trained by Ben Walters The son of Short Grass Coy Maid was no common two yearold last year and he looks a good buv at 3050 3050Of Of the older horses Whiskaway and Fire ¬ brand at Churchill Downs are training well for their engagements in the Clark Handicap the fcattxre of the opening days racing at the Downs It is also noted tliat Exterminator will be here to measure strides with these two cracks for the 10000 added handicap handicapJ J K L Ross also will have his stable here to race for the bir stakes during the corning meeting at the Downs He has asked for stall reservations by wire and has been accommo ¬ dated Rebuke which won the rich Cof ¬ froth Handicap at Tijuana Sunday will be in the Ross entourage when he ships the horses now racing in his colors at the Lower Cali ¬ fornia track to the Downs
