Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 27 1903 Racing at Washington Oakland and Little Rock Fuller had three winners at Little Rock He rode the horse with the long name Hastduge sehen to victory in the opening race and came back in the fifth and sixth to win with Jerry Hunt and Henry of Trastamare Declarations from the Hawthorne Handicap are due April 1 Secretary Kuhl reports that up to date the horses declared out are St Marcos Lord Quex Flying Torpedo Vulcain and The Unknown It was reported some time back that St Marcos would stand train ¬ ing this year but his declaration from such a rich stake is an unfavorable indication Twentyfive thoroughbreds from Captain S i S Browns string left Louisville for New York via the Pennsylvania Railroad They will be = raced in ths East in charge of Peter Wimmer the veteran trainer The string includes Hy ¬ phen the crack fouryearold and twenty two yearolds Hyphens legs are in bad shape but Mr Wimmer believes he will train out all right Messrs Durnell Herz have applied to Charles F Price secretary and general man ¬ ager of the New Louisville Jockey Club for stable room for a string of twelve horses including McChesncy which is entered in the Clark Handicap and Dick Bernard entered in the 6000 Nursery Stakes the Bashford Manor Stakes the Juvenile Stakes and the Kentucky Derby Both horses were recently sold to E E Smathers Jockey Frank Reed who has been riding for John Schorr at San Francisco is ex ¬ pected to reach Memphis during the next two days He will remain there during the en ¬ tire meeting and will accept mounts He is a capable boy who has done some good work on the coast and his presence will relieve the sit ¬ uation somewhat in regards to jockeys as boys are decidedly Ecarce at the present time J W Schorr is about to make a contract with jockey Fuller the New Orleans star for sec ¬ ond call on his services If the contract is made he wil be used for the lightweight work Bellman doing the other riding Two more for Redfern at Benning one for Odom These two star jockeys engaged in a riding duel in the fifth race with Redfern coming out on top Odom was up on Daly and Redfern on Demurrer The latter forced a stiff pace from the rise of the barrier and though the horse tired somewhat he managed under Redferns skillful riding to last ionj enough to gain the big end of the purse If Daly had won this would have made a double for Father Bill as he had already taken his daily purse with Colonsay in the fourth
