Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April IS, 1903 Racing at Aqueduct, St. Louis, Memphis. Oakland and Lakeside. Major Tenny, Sam Hildreths good colt, has been knocking at victorys door in his last three starts. Second place was his portion again today at Memphis when Farmer Jim passed him in the last five yards to gain the winners share of the purse. Ohnet, which set the pace from the three quarters post, ran well, but tired in the stretch and finished third. There was no feature race at Lakesides opening, the card being made up of selling races which, however, provided exciting contests with the exception of the last race, where Alee, F. Cooks six-year-old gelding, had things all his own way, making every post a winning one. It was a mile dash for the older platers and a fair band answered the bugle call. Dodie S. and Marion Lynch were installed equal favorites in the betting and ran second and third, respectively. The opening day at Aqueduct was spoiled somewhat by the fact that it showered all day long, turning the track into a quagmire and the mud runners accounted for all the races. The Carter Handicap fell to Ahumada. owned by J. A. Kyle. The W. C. Daly pair. Illyria and Himself, were expected to win but Ahumada proved to be a better mud runner than either. It looked as though lilyria had the race at his mercy, leading from the three-quarters post until midway of the stretch, where Ahumada, which was in seventh place when they turned for home, came with an electric rush around his opponents and got up in the last few strides to snatch the victory. Yellow Tail also passed lilyria right at the finish to get second money. Kin.ock Park at St. Louis threw open its gates today for its spring meeting and the lovers of the thoroughbred horse turned out in droves to get their first view of the runners for 1903. It rained and misted all morning, slowing up the track and providing upsets in four of the six races, the form followers choosing only two winners in the entire afternoons racing. Barn?y Schreibers Sylvia Tal-bott started them off well when they installed her as favorite and she won easily by six lengths from Barkelmore and Blue Grass Girl. The other favorite to win was Reducer in the third race. The biggest upset was Dr. Kam-merer in the fifth race when he won at edds of 25 to 1. The choice here. Boundlee. could never get closer to the front than fifth place. Audiphone and W. B. Gates had an exciting tussle for the fourth race, running together all through the stretch with W. B. Gates giving way right at the end. This was the feature race of the day. the Inaugural Handicap, and the management added ,500. Eight started, with W. B. Gates and Wax Taper coupled as the R. R. Rice entry, having the call in the betting. Ben Chance ran third.
