LAST OF PETRARCH LINE St. Brendan, Which Was Backed to Beat Sceptre, Dead After Indifferent Stud Career. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE. LONDON, England. April 27.— St. Brendan, the sole hope of the Petrarch male hranch of the Newminster. died in Ireland a few days ago. lie failed to sire a son of sufficient merit to carry on the line, which appears now doomed to extinction. SL Brendan went to the stud in 1306. His « offspring raced for fourteen seasons. During that period in England and Ireland they won eighty-seven flat races and stakes worth about 00,000. In recent years only a few of them won twenty-seven races in other parts of the world. Their total earnings were close upon 0,000. The average distance over which St. Brendans stock were successful was nearly nine furlongs. The best winners are Wethers Well, a fast mare; Mellifont. also possessed of great speed, and Our Stephan. which won the Chester Cup, two and one quarter miles, and was then sold for $::." , 000 to go to India, where he was almost a failure. A brown horse foaled in 1899. St. Brendan was bred in Ireland and raced by the late James Daly. His fee was 00 at the outset and never rcse above 50. He was noted chiefly for his speed. A brilliant two-year-old, the next season he won the Irish Derby and the Turf Club Cup, with 117 pounds up. He went to Doncaster an unbeaten colt, to oppose Sceptre in the St. Leger. He started second favorite, such was his reputation among Irishmen, who derided the idea of the filly beating their champion. He could not stay and finished fifth. Sceptre winning easily, by three lengths. At five and six years St. Brendan won good races in Ireland and England. All told, his winning record was ten races and 8,850. His reputation was a high one. for stakes, particularly in Ireland, at that period were low. St. Brendan was by Hackler son of Petrarch from Court Card, by Royal Hampton - Bendlet. by Bend Or — Scotch Reel, by Scottish Chief. Bendlet was full sist r to Ben Htrome. With such breeding and turf record it is rather surprising St. Brendan did not attain much greater fame as a stallion. The daughters of St. Brendan look as if they will do well as winner producers. Since 1918 their stock have won thirty-three races and $.V .:,t;5. Their produce so far are Orbys IMde, Corcyrian. Herold Philip and Tomahawk. Obviously, therefore, the name of St. Brendan found on the female side of a pedigree is not altogether to be regarded as a source of weakness.
