ZEV REDEEMS HIMSELF ♦ — — Wins the Rainbow Handicap and Will Try for the Derby. ♦ Several Close Finishes Bring Excitement — Cold Weather Does Not Prevent Attendance. ♦ ■ NEW YORK. N. Y., May 15.— Zev, winner of the Paumonok Handicap for the Rancocas Stable on the opening day of the New York racing season, came back with another good race at Jamaica today when he beat a fast band of sprinters in the Rainbow Handicap, at three-quarters. Zev was an added starter. Hildreth had intended giving the colt a work during the afternoon to decide whether or not he would he shipped to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby, but he changed the plan and added him to the stake race, thereby taking down ,250 for the stable, at tha same time giving the son of The Finn and Miss Kearney his needed work. The performance was superior to his race in the Paumonok Handicap, for Zev took up 114 pounds and making the pace all the way held such fast older horses as Dominique and Galantman safe, while his stablemate Rigel, another three-year-old. finished third. After the finish Zev was worked out for a mile and an eighth, but he was tired in the final eighth after running the mile in 1:10. The mile and an eighth was done in 1:55. The earlier fractions were 23%, 46%, 1:13 and 1:2G. The day was miserably cold for racing, although the crowd was a surprisingly large one and the racing excellent. Eight went to the post for the Rainbow Handicap, and from a good start Sande at once rushed into the lead with Zev. Dominique quickly found his way into second place and Galantman raced along with him. The others followed in fairly close order, with Missionary bringing up the rear. Going to the stretch turn Galantman for a time had Dominique headed, but Zev was always well clear of them and racing fast. In the stretch Rigel closed up with a great rush and it was a lively fight for second place. SEPARATED BY INCHES. Right in the last stride Dominique dropped his nose down to take it, and Rigel only beat Galantman a like distance for third money, with the others following along six lengths away. The race run by Zev was such marked improvement over his showing in the Preakness Stakes last Saturday that it is evident lie did not run his race at Pimlico. Whether or not he is of Kentucky Derby caliber is a question, but he is a remarkably fast sprinter. He was shortening his stride badly when worked out the mile and an eighth, but it might be argued that he would not have to run as fast a three-quarters when running the mile and a quarter of the Derby. There was a thrilling finish of the mile and seventy yards for cheap platers that was the third on the program when Clarence Buxtons Purl barely got up to beat Zouave. The latter had made all the running and fought the finish out valiantly. Third fell to Sweet and Pretty, with Sophia Goldman fourth and the others well strung out. A three-quarters dash for three-year-old fillies was the second offering and it serve:! to introduce August Belmonts How Fair. She was beaten by Harry Payne Whitneys Fly by Day and it was largely a question of condition that told the tale, for Fly by Day had been seasoned by racing. It might also be said on behalf of How Fair that McAtee, on the winner, forced her out all through the stretch drive. The set-to furnished all the thrills of the race. Pow Wow. which wa.s third, was beaten eight lengths, while the first two were only noses apart. ♦
