Latest Kentucky Derby Gossip LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 15. Marinelli, who piloted Vigil to victory in the Preakness, will not ride the colt in the Derby. Billy Garth spent all of yesterday around Lexington visiting the various breeding farms. After an effort to sort the wheat from the chaff the task leaves the Derby field to the following : Carl Weidemann, owner of In Memoriam. was not altogether disappointed by the colts race Monday and declared that he just needed that race to put him in perfect racing trim. Trainer Andy Blakely, who intended shipping W. Daniels Blanc Seing to Churchill Downs for the Derby, had to change his plans when the celt went amiss during the running of the Preakness. Tom Healey. in charge of the training of Vigil, the Preakness winner, did not accompany the colt to Louisville. He is due to reach here Friday. Pending his arrival the son of Jim Gaffney is being handled by trainer J. Price. The Kentucky Jockey Club will be compensated in part for possible loss of attendance if there is a rainfall of one-tenth of an inch on Derby day, between the hours of 10 and 2 oclock, general manager Winn having taken out rain insurance. Kings Ransom, a candidate for the Bash-ford Manor, and Postillion, another two-year-old, accompanied Martingale and Golden Rule on their journey from Pimlico. Kings Ransom is the property of J. S. Cosden, while Postillion will race here in the colors of Lewis Garth. Nassau came out of his race Monday in splendid condition and owner Frederick Johnson is jubilant over the manner in which the colt has been performing this year, fie has done everything asked of him and, barring accident, will go to the post in the Derby fit and ready. Calcutta, Better Luck, Martingale, Golden Rule, Aspiration. Bright Tomorrow, Nassau, The Clown, Cliittagong, Pravus, Prince K., Anna M. Humphrey, Wida, Bo McMillan. Great Luck, Rigel, Cherry Pie, Enchantment, Kialto, Chickvale, Picketer, Barbary Bush, In Memoriam, Vigil, General Thatcher and Zev. Owners are making valiant efforts to secure competent jockeys to pilot their representatives. All the better known riders of the East and West have been engaged. Some, however, are still in quest of a competent jockey. Among those desiring to obtain a capable rider is trainer Preston Burch for General Thatcher. The composition of the Derby field is still problematical and a canvas among the owners with eligibles for the race leaves one bewildered. Its open aspect created a desire on the part of owners to "shoot at" the approximately 0,000 prize. "Why not?" they query, "we are getting over IOC to 1 for the 00 starting fee." There is a well defined notion that the three year olds this year are ordinary and that none of the colts have shown superiority. The Preakness stakes was expected to throw light on the Derby situation in some extent, but the contrary seems to be the case, for easterners are showing a keen desire to again meet the winner. This afternoon it seemed promising for twenty-five starters in the race and a possibility that Sam Hildreth would add to this number by sending several of his colts from Jamaica. Mr. Sinclair is anxious to have representation in the big race next Saturday and may order trainer Hildreth to ship Zev and Rigel here. Training operations at Churchill Downs this morning were over a sloppy track. Aspiration worked a mile and a quarter in 2:14. He was well in hand all the way and pulled up sound. Enchantment galloped a half mile in 51 2-5 and Cherry Pie a half mile in 51 3-5. Chickvale acted like a good mud runner when he worked a half mile in 51 2-5.
