RACING AT EMPIRE CITY Pleases a Big Crowd Which Sees Sting Beat Frigate. Butler Two-Tcar-Old Triumphs Over Older Horse in Rousing Duel Two for Thurber. NEW TORK, N. T., Oct. 30. James Butlers two-year-old Sting, in a rousing finish, got up in the final strides to beat H. H. Howards Frigate in the Eclipse Handicap, a mile race for all ages, which featured the card at the Empire City course this afternoon. H. P. Whitneys Dazzler, another two-year-old, was third. After Firm Friend and Satellite had been withdrawn six horses were left to face the starter in the Eclipse Handicap. Dazzler, the lightweight of the field, with only a hundred pounds in the saddle, was rushed away from the barrier in the lead by Thurber. Sande sent Frigate along with a rush, but the Whitney youngster reached the first turn still in the lead and then Sande took Frigate back. Dazzler drew away in the racing down the backstretch until he was out clear, but when Sande began to move up with Frigate the Howard gelding quickly went by into the lead. Sting, meanwhile was improving his position steadily and he was close behind Frigate and Dazzler when the stretch racing started. Then, in a desperate drive, Milner brought the Butler two-year-old up to beat Frigate by a head right at the end. Sande was unable to keep Frigate going under his top weight long enough to withstand the Butler colt, which was carrying only 102 pounds. The race was run in the fast time of 1:39. The weather was clear and warm and a big crowd made the trip to the track, although there was no stake race on the card. Thurber completed a double by riding the first-time starter Flintstone, a three-year-old racing for J. E. Madden, to victory in the short three-quarters of the third race. L. Lieblings Lady Rose was second and J. F. Richardsons Curtis third. Flintstone and Lady Rose had the running between them ail the way. The Madden gelding began in front but relinquished the lead for a brief space to Lady Rose. Aladdin reared when the barrier was sprung and was practically left at the post. "When Thurber was ready he called on Flintstone and the gelding raced into the lead easily on the last turn. He quickly drew.away to win easily by two lengths and a half from Lady Rose. Curtis was five lengths further back in third place. After Lady Argos, racing for C. "W. Landers, had beaten R. Kearneys Impossible easily in the second race, at five and a half furlongs, for two-year-old platers, the stewards disqualified Impossible from second place and moved R. Luries Mitau, which had finished third, up, while Bessie Garshel was placed third. The action of the stewards was taken upon the report of the patrol judge that Impossible had crossed in front at the start and impeded the others. Lady Argos was decicedly unruly at the barrier and delayed the start for a considerable time. When the webbing was sprung, however, she had the best of a poor start and quickly drew away into a commanding lead. Thurber sat still all the way and Lady Argos easily withstood the challenge of Kilbowie on the last turn, drawing away again after disposing of the gelding. In the stretch Impossible rushed up through with a game challenge, but Thurber knew he had the race safe and continued to sit still. Lady Argos led by a length and a half at the finish, while Impossible was a similar margin in front of Mitau, with Bessie Gershel two lengths farther back. Then came the disqualification of Impossible and the change in placing. Sande rode Mrs. E. M. Browns Last Reveille to victory in the first race for maidens of all ages at about three-quarters. II. "W. Maxwells Blue Streak was second and James Butlers Stella Maris third. The start practically decided the result of the race. Sande had the brown three-year-old away in front and took full advantage of it by rushing the colt away from the others in the rush down the back stretch. Hernandez soon found his way into second place with Blue Streak and Stella Maris was racing along in third place on the inside. There was little change in the running order for the remainder of the race. Hernandez called on Blue Streak on the stretch turn and the Maxwell youngster closed up gamely. He was wearing Last Reveille down in the last eighth, but Sande kept the colt going long enough to win by a half length. Blue Streak saved second place easily by two lengths from Stella Maris. The others were well strung out, 1 !
