Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Oct. 31, 1903 Racing at Aqueduct, Latonia, Worth and St. Louis. The twenty-five racing days at the Fair Grounds, which closed the St. Louis campaign of 1903, came to an end today. The Final Stakes, a selling affair for three-year-olds and over, -was carded as the attraction for the get- away. T. P. Hayes Jorday was the winner by a half length from Helen Print, which outlasted the early pacemaker, Lady Strathmore, by. the narrow margin of a nose for second place. Five started. Jockey Foley was the outstanding riding star, piloting two winners during the afternoon. C. R. Ellison announced today that Harry New, winner of last years Latonia Derby; had broken down and that he had given him away to E. R. Rogers, who will break him to harness and drive him to a buggy. By far the largest crowd of the present meeting was on hand at Worth today to witness the last days racing around Chicago for 1903. The Alpine Stakes, at one and one-sixteenth mile3, for three-year-olds, was the last stake of the meeting and was run as the third- race. Sidney C. Love, which had been riinning consistently of late, proved to be best and won in impressive fashion. Big Ben went to the front when the barrier went up and led until far into the stretch, where Sidney C. Love, which had always run along in second position, closed up fast. When a sixteenth out the latter got on even terms with Big Ben and easily outstayed him to the" finish, winning slightly eased up by a neck, Big Ben finishing one length before Haviiand for second place.. The last race of the year hereabouts, a dash of six furlribgs, for three-year-olds .and over, went to Golden Rule, the well-backed favorite. He led from start to finish, winning easily by one length from Henry McDaniel, which beat Gregor K. by one length and-a half for second place.
