CHACOLET TRIUMPHS IN 5,000 DIXIE HANDICAP i * H. P. Headleys Great Mare Scores a Notable Victory at Pimlico ♦ ■ Meets and Defeats High Class Eastern Stars of the Turf and Captures First Big Prize of Spring Season After a Sensational Finish * . BALTIMORE, Md., May 3. — Hal Price Headleys great mare Chacolet came on from Kentucky to win the first big turf fixture of the spring season when she was first in the revival of the famous Dixie Handicap of the Maryland Jockey Club over the mile and three -sixteenths route. It was a glorious day at old Pimlico. From New York, Washington, Philadelphia and surrounding cities came large delegations to join the local patrons of the Maryland Jockey Club in celebrating the revival of one of the oldest of Americas stake fixtures, the Dixie Handicap. A wonderful gathering! A wonderful race! Twelve superb thoroughbreds trained to the minute faced the starter in the Dixie, r. T. Wilsons Wilderness was the favorite, with the Kentucky mare Chacolet secend choice and Flint Stone next in demand. It was a fast-run race and Martingale was the one to cut out the early pace after he had left the post without any delay, once out in front Clirence Kummer nursed him, along cleverly and held command until welt into the stretch. Cherry Pie and King Solomons Seal were the contenders during the early stages, with Revenue Agent within striking distance. In the meantime Chacolet was racing along in. the rear, with M. Garner taking things easy and apparently having no dunce at all. Not until the stretch was reached did Garner make a move. Then, calling on th i Headley mare, .to I egan to ride as if his? life depended upon the success of the Eng-lish-bred daughter of St. Amant. Like a flash Chacolet came on, gaining with every stride and, closing an immense gap, she was at the leaders heels, then with a wonderful burst of speeel she went on, caught Martingale and earned otie of the greate-t ■victories ever scoreel by a marc at old Pimlico. getting the decision in the last stride. Martingie was driving to the limit to held on and barely outlasted the fast-finishing Revenue Agent, a nose separating the pair at the finish. Thus came to an end the revival of a great race of olden days and Kentucky carried off the honors of furnishing the winner of its first running under new conditions and a new era of the sport. FLINT STONE CUT DOWN. In the running of the stake. Flint Stone was badly cut down and was pulled up at the head of the stretch. The Green Spring Valley Steeplechase resulted in a Cosden success when Dan IV.. an imported son of Bx-VotO, easily heat tha I Middleneck Farm Stables Quiek-and and I Bulls ye, another from the Cosden string. w-as the one to finish third, with the Green-tree Stables Pirate Gold finishing fourth in front of Shawn a Glanna, a stablemate to Quicksand. The race was a first-class one. but Pierce, who had the mount on Quicksand, showed an unusual anxiety to show the way and that had something to do with the defeat of the imported filly. From a good start Ethereal Blue, one of J. E. Wideners starters, raced into the lead, but Pierce was right after her with Quicksand and when the Widener filly went ium at the water jump it left Quicksand in a good lead. Then it was that Pierce h id ; every reason for easing his mount back, but he sent her right along with no idea of the two-mile route. In the meantime Dan IV. under the clever riding of Norman Kennedy, was gradually improing his position and he moved into 1 second place. Then old Duettiste made a bobble in the backfield and Byers was unseated. FIRST BY FIVE LENGTHS. Kennedy steadily moved up on Quicksand and through the last half mile he wore her down to win going away by five lengths. Quicksand was eight lengths before Bulls-eye and under a better-judgd ride she might have won. Primrose scored a handy victory over a band of two-year-old maiden fillies in tha second. Frosty Dawn was away quick lv-and opened up a long lead, holding on for second money. Bed Hawk got up in the closing strides for third. Maririelli sent the Salmon filly after Fr. sty Dawn as soon as she got in her stride, MM took the lead half way through the stretch and won by three-quarters of a length. Washington colors were carried to victory in the Gunpowder, run as the third raeo on the aid. when Samuel Boss Extreme finished in front of a lot of untried two-year-olds in a half-mile dash. Barnes had the mount He rushed Extreme off Into a safe lead, but had to swing whip almost to the end to keep the Ultimatum gelding from loafing. Pique and Contract finished second and third.
