FEATURERACEMARRED . • ■ Bad Start in Handicap Eliminates Probable Contenders. ♦ ■ Great Jaz Then Wins Easily While Actuary and Cherokee Chances J Go Glimmering. ♦ LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 14.— Carl Wiedemann earned his first purse of the year when Great Jaz accounted for the Seelbach Hotel Handicap, featuring the card at Churchill Downs this afternoon, his standard , bearer finishing in advance of some crack . sprinters. Moonraker brought up in second place and Kaster Bells just managed to last it out for third money. There were six -starters. Cherokee, making his first start in nearly two years, being installed the favorite with Actuary, and Moonraker best liked of the others. The start was a bad one, so bad that it eliminated Actuary as a possible winning contender and Cherokee also suffering by it. As is frequently the method, not alone here but at other tracks, the starter and his assistants concentration was to get off the bad actors, sometimes to the disadvantage of the more tractable ones. Great Jaz and Kaster Bells were the "cut ups* at the barrier, and when the barrier was released they were away in advance, with Actuary practically left at the post. The advantage Great Jaz had at the start enabled him to go into a tfotd lead, pursued by Easter Bells, with Moonraker following. Cherokee. Pegasus and ! Actuary were far off even in the first quarter. The leaders continued to have matters their way until well along in the last eighth, where Kaster Bells began tiring and the swerving Moonraker passed him for second place. Actuary, closing a big gap, just missed overhauling her for third place. Great Jaz was well under restraint at the windup. Cherokee was well beaten and raced disappointingly. Pegasus will also improve. COLD, THREATENING WEATHER. Cold, threatening weather was again the rule, but a surprisingly large attendance braved the inclement conditions to be on hand to view the sport. The track was slow for the earlier racing, but constant work on it by a huge force of track workers caused it to improve greatly and the going was good for the last four races. There was some spirited contests, but popular choices were beaten and the public seemed off in their deductions. An outstanding surprise of the afternoon was furnished by the failure of Rural Route in the sixth race in which she seemed to be much the best after her sparkling stake victory at Lexington. She might have won this afternoon, but for interference that she suffered while going to the first turn, which forced her back to last place. Finding her winning chances eliminated, Taylor did not persevere with her and she was easing up in the last eighth. Kittle Visitor, with good raring luck in her favor, moved promptly into the lead and held sway for the entire way to win from Kitty Pat, with Fanny De Coursy in third place. LOCAL OWNER WINS. Fifteen fairly good ones contested in the fourth, a seven-eighths dash and Bourbon Boy, locally owned by Arthur Board, won in clever style from iiblon, with J. G. Denny in third place. Bourbon Boy had to be urged hard in the stretch to wear down Giblon, but he went about his task in firve style and disposed of the leader in the last seventy yards. The opener resulted in an upset when Williams Brothers Opulent was downed by the outsider. Repeater, which got up in the last few strides to win. The earlier part of the race found Rob the leader and for a time threatened to show the way throughout. He began tiring in the last eighth and from there on faded fast. Opulent, which had followed him closest, took command in the stretch, but in turn gave way to Repeaters | determined bid. Kueidus, coming from far | back in the last eighth, got up for third place. Thundergod was outstandingly the best in the maiden two-year-old race, which brought , ! six juveniles to the post. He suffered some interference right after the start, but found . a clear course when turning into the stretch ■ and from there on came away with ease to win in handy style from Barrage, which had i gone to the front soon after the start. 1 ; Barrage, hard urged, held Modesta safe for j I third pice. W. K. AppleRates New Beauty earned a i lucky victory in the third at one mile, in which she won from Amity claim, with Pret- : ty Politician just lasting long enough to annex third place from the fast finishing The Reaper. Amity Claim was pounds the best, but the incompetent Thorndyke blun- I dered repeatedly and took his mount back j I constantly. She came like a rocket in the j I stretch, but New Beauty had enough in re- i mat in to hold her safe. A. J. Wells, owner of Honey Gal, claimed Xew Beauty out of the race fc r ,500. The closing dash fell to AVestwood, carrying the E. Trotter colors. He wore down I Runquoi in the last sixteenth and won han- : dily. Kunquoi beat out L.ierre for second It place. The latter was going fast next the inner rail when Runquoi swerved and both- ered her some. AVith clear sailing she would have been second. I K. Trotter claimed Ferguson after the fin- 1 ish for ,800. Jockey Coltiletti was suspended for two days by the starters for disobedience at the post in the fourth race.
