i i i [ Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 15, 1904 Sunday, no racing. A rumor is in circulation to the effect that Dick Welles, Rome Respess great horse, has met with an accident at his owners farm. It is said the horse was looking out a window and saw other horses grazing. He attempted to break the rope by which he was tied and in doing so fell over backwards. It was no- ticed that he was stiff and sore after the accident and it is feared that he met with serious injury. Three good three-year-olds of the present racing season were bred by J. B. Haggin, two i ; I ■ j j | coming from the Rancho del Paso, near Sacramento. The two California youngsters which gained fame in the East are Song and Wine and St. Bellame. Song and Wine is a chestnut colt by Goldfinch -Widow Cliquot, full sister to Dry Monopole, winner of the Suburban Handicap. St. Bellame is in the stable of Sidney Paget and was sired by St. Gatien, the English Derby winner that J. B. Haggin im-i ported from England half a dozen years ago. Africanders race last Saturday will , make him a big factor in the speculation on the result of the Brooklyn Handicap. That he is the pluckiest horse in training goes without saying. He was reported to have broken down the other day, but if the circulator of that story was presjnt when the Star Ruby colt came down the stretch under that grueling punishment he must have felt hke taking to the woods. The great horse, which won the Belmont Stakes, the Suburban Handicap, the Lawrence Realization Stakes, the Saratoga Cup and other rich stakes last year, pulled up sound as a bell of brass and went to his stable ready to run the race right over again. Charles Dwyer and his friends never lost confidence in him and they bet heavily. Incidentally young Dwyer thinks he has the horse of the century and that he can beat Irish Lad, McChesney, Hermis, Waterboy and all the other cracks right off the reel. . — — —
