. J , . ! EAST INVADES WEST FOR DERBY I 1 . Delegation From Pimlico Track in Maryland Reaches Churchill Downs * ] Mad Play and Bracadale, the Rancocas Pair, Together With Nautical, Diogenes, Thorndale, Modest and Mr. Mutt Among the Horses Arriving at Famous Kentucky Course* • LOUISVILLE, Ky, May 14. — While the Kentuckians are all jubilant over the brilliant , showing of Mrs. R. M. Hoots Black Gold in the Derby Trial Purse yesterday, the East will make a bold bid for the Kentucky Derby Saturday. There was a delegation from there that ! : 1 ! reached Churchill Downs this forenoon that will try and again wrest the big prize from the native sons. 1 ] A It was the incoming of those that performed in the Preakness at Pimlico Monday and it 1 ] ! is a worthy company. Heading the shipment were Mad Play and Bracadale, the Rancocas , , Stable pair. With them came Karl Sande and Laverne Fator, the stable jockeys, and S. C. , Hildreth will be on hand to groom them for the big prize. Others that came from the course cf the Maryland Jockey Club were Gifford A. Coch- ] rans Revenue Agent, J. S. Cosdens Nautical, in the care of "Billy" Garth, who captured the t 1920 running of the Derby with Paul Jones; H. C. Fishers Mr. Mutt, stablemate of Nellie A Mcrse. winner of the Preakness; Diogenes, the Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords candidate; Kdward ; B. McLeans Modest, and in the £ame car came Benjamin Blocks Thorndale, both in the I care of J. F. Schorr. H. P. Whitneys Transmute, second to Nellie Morse in the Preakness, i is on his way and the Rowes, both senior and junior, will be on hand for the running. I . Thus it will be se ?n that New York and Maryland will have plenty to say before the , . mile and a quarter is completed Saturday. The hcrses made the trip from Baltimore with- j j ; out incident or accident and all appear to be fit and ready for the big question. . | It was expected that Nellie Morse would be shipped over with Mr. Mutt to keep her . 1 engagement in the Kentucky Oaks, but she was sent back to New York to fill another.5 engagement there before making the trip to I-ouisville. I ] In the meantime Kentucky is in no manner disturbed by the invasion and it is hard to j Make the average man believe that Black Gold will be beaten, while many are already pre- I ! J dieting that it will be a clean sweep for the Kentucky candidates and that Mrs. Hoots sen j] of Black Toney will be followed home by C. Bruce Heads Altawood and that Gallaher Bros. i Chilhowee will possibly be third. These two last named were given their final gallops this morning, when both were sent ■ over the full Derby distance of a mile and a quarter on a slow track. Chilhowee went the distance in 2:10 and Altawoods time was 2:12. Chilhowee, with B. Harvey up and carrying ! j 115 pounds, performed his task easily and was cantering most of the way. His fractions were 25%, 50%, 1:1G%. 1:42 and 2:10. | I I Although Altawoods time was slower, his showing was the more impressive, as he is net a work horse and never runs to his best notch in private trials. He was paced by the two-year-old Daughter Dear for the first half mile and then finished the distance alone. | His fractions were: 26%, 52%, 1:19, 1:45% and 2:12. He finished more resolutely than , Chilhowee and pulled up sound. 1 These were the only Derby trials Wednesday morning. Most of the other prospective I : Derby starters had been given their final preparation in the Derby Trial Tuesday. M H. G. Bedwell wired Will Perkins Wednesday morning that he would defer shipping j Senator Norris to Churchill Downs until he gives the celt a final work over the Pimlkji, track Wednesday. If the colt shows to advantage in that trial he will be placed aboard ah | j car and transferred to Churchill Downs. Perkins has been engaged to handle the colt after i , 1 his arrival here. At this time it would seem that there will possibly be twenty go to the post Saturday i | ; and the field will likely contain the following candidates, with their probable riders: j tSenator Norris K- Sharpe Black Gold J. D. Mocney ; 1 Thorndale* B. Marinelli Diogenes C. Ponce Beau Butler I* Lyke tPolo Ground H. Stutts Bob Tail............ G. Carroll tGlide ; j1 Revenue Agent D- Hum tCloister E. Pool Nautical. c- Kumir.cr Modest J. Butwell | + King Gorin 11 M- Garner Bracadale E. Sande ■ Mr. Mutt J- Meriir.ee Mad Play L. Fator . . i Chilhowee B. Harvey Transmute L. McAtee !
