EDISTO, away well, was in dose quarters in the first eighth and came on the outside when entering the stretch, but finished fast, and wore SOCRATES diwn in the final sixteenth to win, drawing clear. SOCRATES began sluggishly and was forced to bump his way through tc the front and raced into a safe lead, but tired near the end. BILL DWYER raced well throughout, and had no mishaps. CHAMPIGNOL showed early speed. AMPOLAO began slowly and finished well. REMINDER was not persevered with and raced green. . r7QAi O SECOND RACE — 1 MUe and 70 Yards. Oct. 3, 1922— 1:41%— 5— 120. Won driving; secrnd and third the same. MOM followed MONT MAJELLA in closest pursuit to the last turn, then raced into a long lead, but was tiring and doing her best at the end. SUPERBUM made up ground and. coming fast through the stretch, was pressing the winner bard at the end. BENDITA raced prominently, but tired in the stretch drive. MONT MAJELLA set a good pace to the last turn and tired. ANNIVERSARY ran fairly well. ESCOBA DORO raced prominently from tha start and, working her way up on the inside, passed COMEDY and finished fast. COMEDY was much used, chasing the winner closely and tired badly. LALLY was shuffled back after the start and closed a big gap. GOV. SMITH showed improvement and finished resolutely. WILDRAKE quit badly. ORDINANCE, close up from the start, moved up steadily on the outside in the racing through the hack- stretch and. slipping up between LAUsUUCO and SW1NUAI.ONG on the stretch turn, raced into an easy lead and was easing up at the end. LAIRANO showed a high flight of speed and, racing SWl.MiAI.ONli into exhaustion, to k the lead, but could not withstand the rush of the winner. SAMARITAN was a forward contender fnru the start and ran a good race. WISE COUNSELLOR, in close quarters while go-S0 ing to the first turn, moved up with a rush on the far turn and came on the outside on the streteh turn, but was tiring at the end. SHERMAN was pinched off on tho inside while going to the first turn and finished resolutely next to the inner rail.
