CLOSE FINISH AT CLEVELAND Mayor Carrel and Mill Boy Stage Stirring Finish in Fifth Race. Ego Scores Easy Victory in Maple Heights Feature Race Good Weather Draws Big Monday Attendance. CLEVELAND, Ohio, Sept 15. Showing the way throughout, G. W. Smiths Ege, scored a handy victory over Sun Brae and Lady Argos in the fourth and feature race at Maple Heights Park this afternoon, a dash of five and a half furlongs. The daughter of Peter Quince was away well and taking the lead held it to the end. In the stretch run Sun Brae outstayed Lady Argos after both had raced prominently in the early stages. One of the closest finishes of the meeting resulted in the fifth race. After disposing of Mill Boy rounding the turn for home. Mayor Carrel just lasted to earn the verdict over Grass Tree by inches. Mill Boy had no opposition for third place. Fair Rowena, the favorite, ran a poor race and dropped completely out of contention after going six furlongs. Weather conditions today were more inviting and the largest mid-week crowd of the meeting kwas in attendance. The track dried out considerably as the afternoon progressed. Obstinate made a resolute bid in the last quarter and got up in time to take second place. Amelia S. came from far back in the stretch and finished strongest of all. Romping Home, the favorite, ran wide entering the stretch and quit L. C. Everett claimed John Hoshor out of the second race for ,000. Marshall Cassidy has been engaged to do the starting at the sixteen day meeting which opens at Brooklyn Park, here a week from Wednesday. L. T. Whitehill will ship his string of eight head from here to Havre de Grace at the close of this meeting. Padgett and Dougherty will send a division of their stable, including Bucado, Jolly and Tdpango, in the same car.
