LAUREL., Md., Oct 17 Goshawk, Will Land and Broomster had the contest be-j tween themselves in the Hampton Handicap, .the threc-quartej s feature of a good card of racing at Laurel Park this afternoon and divided up the ?2,000 purse after an exciting struggle. Goshawk was always in front, but was tiring at. the end and doing his best : to maintain half a length of the six length .lead into which Hastings permitted him to take in the first quarter. The son of "Whisk Broom -11., as usual, showed -a high flight of i speed in setting the pace and succeeded in Ihis attempt to carry 126 pounds, conceding much weight to his opponents. He ran the three-quarters in 1-:12, the fastest at the track since it was deeply harrowed a few days after the opening of the meeting.. The Martin three-year-old was ridden by T. .Brothers, followed ,by Rin Tin Tin closely and drew away from her in the final sixteenth. Suburban beat the others. ; The second race fell to Lester Doctor, which, alertly ridden by Ivan Parke, made all the pace and beat Captain Costigan by threo parts of a length. Captain Costigan outlasted Carlton by a head for second. The latter was gaining on the leaders at the end and just failed to overtake them in a gamo finish. Altissimo, wilh Hudgins astride, came around leaders, straightening out in the sixth race, and beat Red Wine by a length for the major portion of the purse. Stevens was nosed out for second place. Previeux made the pace, but was passed going to the half mile post by Mary Agnes after she had been carried wide at the first turn. The effort of I making up the ground was too much for Mary Agnes, and she quit in the final quarter. Kitty Troxcll finished first in the final race, but was disqualified for fouling .Fancy Free in the stretch run. Royal Duck and Old Faithful divided the remainder of the purse after Fancy Frees portion had been taken out. She was rated in front until Kitty Troxcll challenged at the turn of ths stretch then set her down. She tired, allowing Kitty Troxcll to draw alongside when the foul was committed.
