Many turfmen remember the sensational victory of ileelick at the Fair Grounds, in 190S, yhich won the famous Crescent City Derby and was ridden by Dugan. The thoroughbred had been shipped from California to New Orleans, specially to be entered in that race. Meclick was taken off the car, only ten hours before the bugle sounded for the Crescent City Derby, and to the amazement of the turf world, Meelick, which was owned and trained by Sam Hildrcth, easily took down the coveted purse. Hildreth is now trainer for the Tlancocas Stable, owned by Harry F. Sinclair of New York. Hildreth is considered by many the best trainer in the United States, and it was under his supervision that Zev, Americas greatest money winning horse, was developed. Never in the history of the American turf had a race horse been shipped the distance that Meelick was and then captured a noted race, within ten hours after being taken off the car. Former jockey Dugan is of the opinion that Meelick possessed more stamina than any other thoroughbred he had ever ridden in his entire racing career. Dugan has had a wide range of experience as a rider. He at one time rode for Baron Rothschild of Germany and Count Lazaroff of Russia, and for many years was the star jockey for August Belmont, chairman of the New York Jockey Club. Dugan also at one time was under contract to Harry Payne Whitney and John V. Gates, of Chicago. Dugan was born in San Francisco, Cal., thirty-three years ago and won his first race on a horse called Jake Ward, at Emeryville race track, California.
