RAIN AT LEXINGTON TRACK ♦ Most of Morning Work Finished Before the Downfall. Lad o Mine Makes Good Impression — Kentucky Cardinal Already in Splendid Condition. ♦ LEXINGTON, Ky., April 14.— Despite the fact that a heavy rain this morning caused i the Kentucky Association track to be covered with a slippery layer of mud, it was a day of much activity for many of the thoroughbreds in training here, something like 150 horses being out for gallops during the early hours of the morning, most of these being hustled into action before rain set in. No exceptional gallops were registered by any of the Kentucky Derby eligibles quartered at the Lexington course, although several showed plenty of speed and were galloped under a snug hold. Lad o Mine, W. E. Caskeys Torchbearer — Sly Wing colt, was clocked in the fastest time of the morning workouts. The Caskey representative, seemingly eager to run, began from the three-quarters post and ran the three-quarters in 1:16 .turning the first quarter in :23Vfe. three-eighths in :33%, half :4S%, five-eighths in 1:02 and finished out the distance in 1:16. Lad o Mine has demonstrated in his work here that he is of Derby caliber and with careful training from now until May 16 may prove to be a real contender in Kentuckys blue riband. The Torchbearer colt possesses nice early speed and should not be distanced at the start. Kentucky Cardinal, D. H. Breckinridges Derby hope, trained by J. Cal Milam, went three-quarters in 1:16% handily. The good looking chestnut, now in splendid condition, ran with practically no effort at all and made the first quarter in :M%. reaching the half in :" »2S. The Breckinridge entry was not even breathing hard at the end. Another nice workout was that of Gaffney, Hancock and Clays Derby candidate. Gaffney was timed in 1:18 for three-quarters, Continued on sixteenth pace. RAIN AT LEXINGTON TRACK Continued from first page. after having pulled up in the last eighth. The fractional time was :23%, :35%, :48%. 1:02% and 1:18. King Nadi, from the J. J. Troxler barn, was sent three-quarters in 1 :17, handily. The time for .the first quarter was :24%, with the half in :50. Afris, Mrs. A. I* Viaus Omar Khayyam-Bonnie Tess colt, worked three-quartan in 1 :lt %, handily. The fractional time for Afris was :24%, :49%, 1:03, 1:16%. Auburn, a bay filly belonging to Robert S. Clark, galloped a mile in 1 :47, eased up. The half was run in :50Ms and three-quarters in 1 :18%. Sir Peter, one of the three Derby eligibles in the Hal Price Headley establishment, trained by Tommy Taylor, turned in an even three-quarters move. Sir Peter sprinted the half in :49 and three quarters in 1 :16%. Traymore, M. C. Cundiffs Sweep On — Munition chestnut colt that showed a line effort a week ago, just cantered three-quarters in 1 :19 today. The half was in :52 and the first quarter in :25%. Captain Donan took things easy for a mile, being timed in 1:46, the half in :52Vand. Step Along, owned by Fred Grabner of Chicago and trained by Will Perkins, was given an easy workout of a half mile in :57, while Son of John was galloped two miles. Both Step Along and Son of John were run in the mud and rain. Temara, Mrs. E. Viaus second Derby nominator, galloped three-quarters in 1 :25 over the slippery course. The half was in :57%. ♦
