Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 15, 1905 Racing at Aqueduct, New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis Union Park and Fair Grounds and San Franciscso. Fred Gerhardy has been appointed starter at the spring meeting of the Kentucky Racing Association, which will open at Lexington May The New Orleans Jockey Clubs meeting of fifty-four days at City Park, New Orleans, ended this afternoon and with it came the finish of the longest period cf racing in the history of the Crescent City. The close of the meeting had about it nothing that the most enthusiastic supporters of the new plant may point to with pride. The last week or ten days brought about so wholesale a cleaning ■ out that there was left for the last six days of I racing a very ordinary lot of horses, with the ! result that the sport dropped to a point far ! below the standard even of a winter meeting. There was nothing particularly brilliant | about the opening of the racing season at St. : Louis today. The weather was decidedly I against a great outpouring of people, a cold and penetrating wind blowing from the north. Conservatively there was not more than 3,000 | persons at either Union Park or the Fair , Grounds, although the officials of both plants . claimed that they had the support of the better element. There was little to enthuse over in [the racing at either track.
