Wins Huntingtons Principal Race in Driving Finish. • Briggs Buchanan Second, But Going Fastest of All After Being Crowded Back I on First Turn. ♦ HUNTINGTON, W. Va., April 14.— E. Mc-Quellins Rebuke scored a rather lucky victory over Briggs Buchanan and The Falconer in the Rotary Club Purse, which attracted the best field at the Tri-State Fair Grounds today. It was only after a driving finish that Rebuke lasted to win by a head. Briggs Buchanan was crowded back going to the first turn, but finshed gamely through tho sreteh and was going fastest of all at the end. The Falconer cut out the early pace and showed the way into the stretch, with Rebuke in close pursuit. In the final eighth the trio of placed horses provided a rousing struggle. The Falconer held on gamely during the final drive and was a bang-up third. A drizzling rain fell during most of the afternoon, but it failed to injure the track to any great extent. The attendance was up to the average for a midweek day. In the Bag was fortunate in finding an opening next to the inner rail while rounding the last bend, which advantage enabled him to beat Channel home by a narrow margin in the opening dash. Ruby Marsh held the others safe. My Biddy, the favorite, was outpaced throughout. Taking command at once. Black Art had the speed of the party at all stages of the second race and won handily. Cedric held the balance safe. After a slow beginning Dora Lutz raced up into second position in the stretch. It was only in the final stride that Clever Seth got up to beat Royal Dick in the third race. Royal Dick held on with rare courage after setting most of the pace. Frank Fogarty came from the rear in the last eighth to beat the others home. Nicely rated by jockey F. Hern, Wildcat closed steadily during the stretch run to score a handy victory from Messines, the pacemaker, in the fourth. Recoup raced prominently to the stretch and, although tiring badly, was an easy third. Comedy took the lead entering the back stretch in the fifth and thereafter the result was never in serious doubt. Rock Salt had no opposition for second place. Blossoms quit so badly she enabled Kent L. to drop into third place during the final eighth. Lady Chooo scored an easy victory over a small but select band in the sixth event. She shook off Seths Bacon while rounding the far turn and held Lanert safe during the run home. Seths Bacon tired badly in the stretch but was best of the remainder. m -
