Never before has the Maryland course been better prepared for a spring meeting in the matter of horses of quality and most of them are fit and ready for what is to be offered. Today there is a threat of a rain in the air and a decided chill, as the winds blew from the Susquehanna river, but there are high hopes that all will be right for the opening. With the coming of the new meeting there will be the uncovering of many of the best borsea in training and the most notable is Mrs. Vanderbilts Sarazen, the champion of last year. I Max Hirsch reported that the son of High Time and Rush Box had shipped well from Belmont Park and that he, with the other horses of the stable, were doing exceedingly well. He was not definitely decided whether or not to start Nicholas in the Harford Handicap, but he is in the list named through the entry box and he will probably be seen under silks. The Harford Handicap, which is at three-quarters, with $" ,000 added by the association, will bring together a swift-running band of horses. Of the acceptances through the entry box Richard T. Wilsons Wilderness is the top weight under 117 pounds. Wild Aster and The Vintner, both in the Greentree Stable, are next under 113 and 111 respectively. James Rowe, Jr., has named both Candy Kid and Noah from the EL P. Whitney stable and another notable in the three-year-old division is J. K. Griffiths Single Foot. W. S. Kilmers Sunny Man has also been named among the probable starters and Jack Richardsons Tester, Which raced well at Bowie, is almost a certain starter. It will be both a large and a representative field that will face the barrier and the renewal of the Harford Handicap cannot fail to be a notable one. With the coming of the bis? st-tties there also came many of the prominent riders and the Havre de Grace meeting will mark their first appearance in the saddle for this year. Havre de Grace will begin the year for many of the prominent New York stables and for some days many of the horses from these establishments have been on the grounds putting on the finishing touches in training. Some of those who were out this morning with their charges were T. J. Healey with the horses of R. T. Wilson and V. J. Salmon, G. It. Tompkins with the Glen Riddle Stable of S. D. Riddle. Max Hirsch with the champion Sarazen and the others of Mrs. Vanderbilts Fair Stable, R. A. Smith with those of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Jeffords, James Rowe, Jr., with a big band of the horses of EL P. Whitney, recently shipped from the Brookdale Farm in New Jersey; Woods Garth and his father. William Garth, with the J. S. .osden string; Clyde Ihillips with the Greentree Stable string that he raced with such success in New Orleans and at Bowie; J. I. Smith with Willis Sharpe Kilmers stable; Frank Bray with the Lilane Stable of W. L. Walker, that raced so successfully at Miami. J. W. McClelland and Roy Waldron spent the winter at Havre de Grace with the horses of the Xalapa Farm Stable and they are at home here, while there are many others besides these that will show their thoroughbreds for the first time during the meeting. « __ — .
