BLUE BONNETS BEST DAY 4 1 Immense Gathering Turns Out for Saturdays Good Program. a Ciiliuliiim Stafrp* Sncrcssfui Return hj Smashing Performance in Winning Jacques Cartler Handicap. MONTREAL,, Que., June 13.— Today was the banner day of the Montreal Jofky Club*s meeting and an immense gathering turned out to witness the sport, by far the largest crowd that witnessed a race at Blue Bonnets in years. The Jacques Cartier Handicap, a dash of three-quarters, which was m provided as the principal attraction, is one of the annual features of the spring meetings here and in todays running a field of good sprinters went to the post. The winner rame from an unexpected quarter when Cala-dium, an absentee from racing since late in 1923. came back . to the races and in a sparkling contest outran Digit and Mainmast, which .finished in the order named behind the winner. Caladium showed a smashing performance, under the circumstances which stamps him as a horse to be reckoned with in stakes and handicaps to be decided on the Canadian circuit during the remainder of the year. When the start cams LMgit was immediately rushed to the front, running clrse to the inner rail, but before the horses had gone more than an eighth, Mainmast was hustled up on even terms, while llontaud moved up on the outside. From that point to the head of the stretch, the three raced head and head in a stirring contest that brought the great crowd to its feet. Making , the bend for home the three leaders bore I out slightly and here llidenour was quick to j make his move. Caladium responded rapidly j to urging, clcsed on the leaders and, re-1 sponding courageously to the whip, drew clear less than an eighth from home and in the final stages was going away. Digit hung on grimly under punishment, but Mainmast faltered under tho weight and was a tired horse as he staggered over the finish line. Uontaud dropped-far back when the real test came. An ordinary band of platers went to th© post in the first race, for which Otai was favorite. The winner turned up in Reliable which made all the pace and beat James F. OHara by three lengths. The latter was the one to furnish the contention from the start. He was tiring at the end and under a drive to stall of Watch Charm, which closed stoutly next the inside rail. Fourteen went to the post in the second race, a dash of a mile and an eighth. Bal-lotcar and Trail Blazer outran their rivals to the first turn and raced like a team until straightened out in the home stretch, where Iloxana came from behind and moving up strong, wore Trail Blazer down and in a driving finish beat him by half a length. Trail Blazer continued on for another mile and an eighth after the race before his rider could pull him up. Thos. Lynn made a show of his opponents in the third race. Morris sent him away from the barrier at a rapid pace and before they had gone an eighth opened up a four lengths lead. Entering the home stretch he eased his mount up a bit but at the end he again drew away and at the finish had a lead of a couple of lengths over Kink, which came from behind and finishing with a rush just managed to g?t up in time to nose Pheasant out for second place. All in All ran back to her good race at Ottawa and scored an easy victory in the fourth race. Off poorly she worked her way up on the extreme outside and finishing with a great burst of speed shook off her rivals in the last eighth and drew away into a four lengths lead at the end. Polly Wale out gamed the tiring pacemaker Carlton to beat him by half a length for second place. Mrs. M. A. Barnes* Clansman won the sixth at a mile. Running lapped on Jacques to the stretch he assumed a short lead at this point ! and held it to the end under hard urging, ! beating St. Martins by half a length. Tho latter always was close to the pace and j made a bold run in the streeh where he disposed of Jacques, but failed to overhaul th3 winner. Jacques saved third place from Squarson. The latter was knocked back to last shortly after the start and ran a fine race. The Joaquin Stables Roseate II. was a cantering winner of the final race. After racing Kama into defeat in the back stretch he dn w away into a long lead on the upper turn and merely cantered the remainder of the mile and an eighth journey. Malapert under stout restraint in the early running closed stoutly to take second place while George 1 emar was third.
