i • ; . CHINN ACTED FOR WAGGONER Texas Sportsman Authorized Big Offer for Carlaris Prior to His Victory in the Coffroth. LENLNCTON. Ky.. April. 19. Col. Phil T. China made an honest-to-goodn-ss effort to buy Carlaris from W. T. Anderson, anil the bidding he did was for the account of W. T. Waggoner of Ft. Worth. Tex., though he was not aware of that until several wires had passed between he and Anderson. Investigation discloses that the firm of Dale and Dalziel were commissioned by Mr. Waggoner to buy the horse for him. They knew of the business relations between Chinn and Anderson and they naturally went to Chinn with a request to get a price on the horse "for a gentleman who is amply able and willing to pay a good price." The day before the running of the Coffroth Handicap and while Chinn was negotiating with Anderson, judge Sam C. Nuckols wired from Tampa that he was trying to buy Carlaris for the account of W. T. Waggoner and asked Chinns assistance in getting the deal closed. When Raymond Dale heard this he said: "Surely, the wires have become crossed, for my efforts are in behalf of Mr. Waggoner, and I will understand that his name was not to be divulged unless the colt should be bought." By the time the "wires were uncrossed" by use of the long distance phone to Tampa and Ft. Worth, Carlaris had won the Coffroth Handicap and the negotiations were called off.
