POMPEY IN SPEED GALLOP • Great Colt Makes Impressive Showing in Workout. • J. B. Widener. J. K. Madden. H. . Fisher ami Knneocas Stable Horses Bspoatoi Within Next Few Days. « NEW YOBK. X. Y.. April 1!— W. B. Coe"s Pompey. progressed another step in his training for the Kentucky I erby. when he displayed a high flight of speed in a seven-eighths dash over the main course at Belmont Bark this morning. The bay son of Sun Briar — Cleopatra, accompanied by his stablemate. Black Maria, was brought out on the track shortly before eight oclock. He was playful and full of life. The pair galloped slowly towards the mile post on the back stretch and. on a signal from trainer Karriek. started together from the seven-eighths post and worked back to the stand. A high, cold wind was blowing at the time, but it did not seem to affect the speed of Pompey. Inder steady restraint, he galloped through the first quarter in :2:W5. and on to the half in :47V,, the eolt was still under steady restraint and went the first five-eighths in 1 :»% and the three-quarters in 1 rltf,. Through the final eighth Pompey was well under restraint and finished the distance in 1 :28. The work was an impressive one and he came back without taking a long breath. Black Maria ran along with him the entire journey. Despite the cold blustery weather that prevailed at the Nassau county course today, there was considerable activity. Horsemen took full advantage of the slight improvement in the weather over the peat few days and sent their charges along at a fast clip. Schooling activities at the barrier were of a spirited nature and upwards of two hundred juveniles were put through the pace under assistant Boy Dickerson. The many" improvements, under construction, were rushed along while a new force of men began to tear down the inner rail on the main track in front of the stand. The old wooden rail will be replaced by a steel and wood one, corresponding to the new one that borders the new seven-eighths straightaway. The main track will be thrown open in the course of the next few days when the grading on the chute is completed, where it crosses the main track.
